Royal Trip Report: Everybody's Coming to America (Plus More)

All the royal peoples headed to the U.S. last week. To my great disappointment, it was not for the purpose of remaking any Eddie Murphy films. But we can look at what they wore anyway. I suppose.

We start with the obvious: HARRY. IN UNIFORM. RED (make that GINGER) ALERT.

Harry was in D.C. and then Colorado, and there were 1) uniforms and 2) FLOTUS cuteness and 3) Olympian cuteness and 4) so, so much more. A+.

Of course, Prince Harry got the most fanfare, but we know better - other royals deserve some attention too:

Come on down, Haakon and Mette-Marit! On down to Texas, specifically, where the Norwegian crown princely couple started their tour (click here for your Haakon fix via video). Their five day tour also took them to California, where in addition to official engagements, they hit a rock concert for a Norwegian band, because why not. Mette-Marit was back on her best daytime form, I thought - simple and mostly white, with some pops of color for good measure. My favorite was the yellow Valentino with the white coat; least favorite...probably the Chanel with the long coat and pleated skirt, which she paired with some serious braids (click here for an overview with a look at some of the details, including that 'do).

Oh, and if that red Valentino coat looks familiar...see her coat for the Luxembourg wedding. Now that's bulk buying.

Paying a visit to the U.N. in New York City was Queen Máxima, who met with Ban Ki-Moon. It was the second occasion in the week (the first being a family outing to a concert) when she showed up with her hair up, which I think is some kind of record. Mark it on the calendars, kids. Her visit was pretty much an incognito one; actually, Crown Princess Mary was in New York prior to the Dutch inauguration, also an extremely quiet trip.

Queen Máx just missed another Queen in NYC - Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustaf started out a visit to America there, hanging out with Princess Madeleine and future son-in-law Chris O'Neill. (Silvia's Moschino jacket was previously worn by Madeleine - which allows me to dream up a scenario in which Madeleine critiques Silvia's tour wardrobe What Not To Wear-style before letting her leave New York, and this amuses me.) They've visited a few eastern locales, including a gala dinner in Delaware with the next best thing to actual tiaras: tiaras as necklaces, specifically the ruby and diamond tiara that once belonged to Crown Princess Margaret. (Rubies and diamonds made for a subtly red, white, and blue outfit for the Queen, I couldn't help but notice.)

With Europe practically emptied out, there isn't much "regular" activity to cover this week.

Apart from the Pope's inaugural mass, it was a pretty low key week for many of our leading ladies. Lots of dark colors (for Victoria, because they're still in mourning for Princess Lilian), which makes Máxima's electric blue and Letizia's vibrant green pop. Letizia wins it because she didn't attempt to go the full Kermit, like you know Máx would have done.

The middle number is from Malene Birger, and where there's Birger, you know there will be a Danish princess: sure enough, Crown Princess Mary has worn this one in the past. Who wore it best? (Me, I think it works really well with that hat, so I'll give it to Kate. Also, I just really like her in teal-ish colors flying solo with HM and the DoE, apparently.) Andrea Casiraghi and Tatiana Santo Domingo welcomed a baby son last Thursday! Princess Caroline told a journalist at the Rose Ball that the baby's name is Sacha. The glowing new grandmother was my pick for best dressed at the ball, since Charlotte wore those shoes and Charlene got me all excited that she might be wearing some interesting jewelry for a change, only to find that it was merely beading on her Ralph Lauren gown. Beading she mostly covered up with her jacket, no less.

Tiara Watch: In Denmark and Norway and the Netherlands, Oh My!

When it rains, it pours! So long we were in a tiara drought, and now the royal world is just lousy with the things. Oh, why can’t it be like this all the time…

The Danish royal family welcomed the President of Slovakia for a state visit last week, which naturally included a glittering state banquet. Crown Princess Mary wore her wedding tiara with the pearl option, along with her fabulous aquamarines. I wondered if she’d use the pearl option to showcase some of the great pearl jewels she has, and sure enough – she’s on it! I also love this older Kenth Fredin gown, which seems swishy in all the right ways.

Princess Marie showed up in one of those gowns that always seems to be fresh off the homecoming dance sale rack – though her usual diamond floral tiara does seem a tiny bit more legit than the Homecoming Queen’s. Queen Margrethe paired the Baden Palmette Tiara with what seems to be her favorite gown of the year, and Princess Benedikte wore Queen Ingrid’s Star and Spike Tiara.

Earlier they all welcomed the President at the airport, Mary and Marie in chic hats, Benedikte in a koosh ball hat, and Marge in her Teletubby topper.

On the second day of the visit, Mary made a well-coordinated appearance alongside the First Lady (in a Prada suit with a colorful Paul Smith scarf and matching accessories) before attending the return dinner with the rest of the family. And it’s here that Marie redeems herself, looking infinitely more festive than the rest of them with her little sparkles.

The Dutch were also in on the state visit action last week. Queen Beatrix welcomed the President of Italy for a low-key trip, highlighted by a state dinner where the dress code seems to have been something along the lines of “dress up, if you want, I guess…”. Beatrix wore the all-purpose Rose Cut Bandeau, and Princess Margriet went tiara-less (the horror!). Yes, this was sorely missing Princess Máxima, who was on a visit to Nigeria.

Also dodging her tiara-wearing duty last week was Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who missed the annual gala dinner for the Parliament. In her absence, Queen Sonja wore Queen Maud’s Pearl and Diamond Tiara, and Princess Astrid wore the Vasa Tiara.

And the state visit fun has just begun: the British will have their first state visit of the year later this week.

Runway to Royal: The Luxembourg Wedding

I don’t know about you, but I have the most massive tiara and couture hangover from this weekend. To soothe my symptoms of withdrawal, I have a couple more posts for you on the fabulousness we just enjoyed. Hey, we’re not going to see another event like this for a good while, so we better take it all in. First, a little comparison from runway to real royal life: who adapted it best?

This is legit couture – made just for you, so runway matches aren’t exact. So many of you noted multiple similarities between a lot of the Elie Saab gowns, and I don’t disagree with you. As with most ornate creations, it doesn’t help that we can’t pick out the fine details like we would be able to if we were standing right in front of the dresses. But I can’t get enough of it either way, so I remain firmly on Team Bring It On. For the record, Marie-Chantal's was my favorite - a true classic.

Also for the record, there were Elie Saab ensembles that didn't float my boat. Sorry, Clotilde. I'm still upset there wasn't a legit tiara (I just love the pink tiara she wore on her wedding day sooooo much, I'm complaining about its absence again), and the wedding outfit needed some color somewhere in the worst way.

I guess this is something of a classic silhouette for Mary; she’s worn these tiered gowns in the past, and I won’t lie to ya, they’re never my favorite. But they are probably spectacular in motion.

I was surprised how many of you hated Sophie’s outfit for the wedding. All I know is this: I watched the arrivals live, and it was like one long parade of standard suits and shiny suits and standard suits and shiny suits. Sophie was a breath of fresh air, totally striking in her black and white. And I couldn’t tell there were horses in the print – something which seemed to bother several of you on a deep level - until looking at photos.

Some found Caroline’s dress for the gala hideous, but I say to you: rejoice, for she stopped short of matching boots. (I actually quite like it, especially when you compare it to some of her recent evening choices).

What I loved about both Astrid and Margaretha was that I would never in a million years have selected these dresses for these two ladies. But here they are, workin' them like nobody's business.

Máxima is my favorite runway to royal example: she's given this Jan Taminiau dress so much more life with her feather boa on steroids and her rubies. Bless her and her flamboyance.

Royal Fashion Awards: The Religious Wedding in Luxembourg

Well, I think our lovely royals exhausted themselves after the fabulousness of last night. Because today's results at the wedding were...a mixed bag, at best. But loads of fashion to review is fun either way, so let's get started:

Can't for the life of me figure out the purpose of MT's faux shawl, clasped not with one of the wonderful family gems but with a faux brooch. (The horror!) Note she's carrying yet another shawl too. Just how cold did she think the church would be? Still, I'd rather have the extra fabric in identifiable form than in straight ghost sheet form, like Tessy. I have to give this one to Margaretha and Marie Astrid, with an honorable mention to Sibilla.

There was a lot of strange headgear at this wedding overall, and in particular, a lot of massive hats preventing view above navel level, because that's what you want when you're navigating steps in front of photographers and greeting people you're supposed to recognize. I understand until the wedding got started and kept going...and going...and going. A marathon ceremony requires a hat that'll have your back in case you doze off. Well played, ladies. Letizia's chic Felipe Varela wins it, though I also find myself with quite a lot of affection for Astrid.

Brave, these ladies, to go without hat cover for their mid-ceremony nap. I don't know what Mette-Marit was doing there with her hair, exactly, but I don't think it fits the hat bill. (I found her outfit kind of depressing, honestly.) You have to love Fabiola with a headband, Zeina tall and glamorous in red (outfit look familiar to you?), and Sarvath in purple, but this one goes to Lalla Salma. If you're not going to wear a hat to a hat event, you might as well be a red-headed Rapunzel.

These ladies flew under my radar for the most part. Margarita looked a little dated to me, and I'm not sure the Duchess of Braganza was in the same season as everyone else with that fur trim, but Marie looked lovely and classy.

Oh, this pains me. This whole category pains me, because there's so much potential gone to waste. Issues with, uh, drooping and so on, are tragic, as is just too much fabric. Mathilde was my automatic worst while watching the wedding - that coat is adding so much to her frame that shouldn't be there! - but after seeing photos, Victoria is committing greater sartorial sins. The bunched up dress underneath, the overly long length and the hemline mess, and the hat which looks like she caught a flipped pancake on the way to the church...my poor Victoria. Not her finest moment.

I tried to fit her in with another category, but let's face it: girlfriend's a category of her own. You're either going to hate it for the muddy yellow color or the sleeves which may have been ripped off of a costume from Beauty and the Beast, or you're going to love it because it's Máx. Oh so very Máx.

The Countess of Wessex

Mary's on my list of faves: shocking, I know. Märtha Louise made the faves in her gray sheath accessorized with the brooch that closed the coat on her wedding gown: now that's a genuine surprise. As is Caroline, honestly, who managed to shop at the sane end of Uncle Karl's Chanel closet for a change. But let me tell you something: the only guest that got a literal jumpy clap out of me on arrival was Sophie. So chic, very retro Dior, with just a touch of wacky to keep it interesting when you bother to look closely (yes, there are horses on that Emilia Wickstead print). I loves.

Royal Fashion Awards: The Pre-Wedding Gala Dinner in Luxembourg

You guys. YOU GUYS. I don’t even know where to start. You know what they did, those royal ladies? THEY BOUGHT OUT THE WHOLE ELIE SAAB BOUTIQUE. And then they topped all those gowns of wonder with TIARAS. And I really feel like we should have had some advance notice, you know, so I could have started a fitness regime months ago. (Well, I would have at least procured some oxygen and extra wine, for heaven’s sake.) I mean, I’m just not in proper shape for this level of extended jumpy clapping. BUT I WILL FORGE ON. For you, my loves. All for you.

I, like many of you, have been crossing fingers and toes in the hope that we might get an Elie Saab royal wedding gown on Saturday. Even if we don’t, I shall rest easy knowing Maria Teresa has at least introduced her daughter-in-law to the couture magic. Gorgeous Saab for both of them.

And then chaos would reign. (No, it wouldn't.) So I’ll resist. Right now, I’m liking Mette-Marit and her kicky Pucci…but ask me in five minutes and I might switch to Máx and her oh-so-Máx Jan Taminiau outfit…and in another five, I might need to give Margaretha her proper credit for joining in on the bulk family Elie Saab discount. It's a never-ending loop of fabulous.

These ladies sure do get their money out of their gala gowns. They never seem to get rid of any. (I thought Paola’s looked so familiar, and then it hit me: she wore it to Máxima and Willem-Alexander’s pre-wedding shindig 10 years ago.) I give this to Anne-Marie, because of purple. (Her sister Queen Margrethe was there too, wearing an oft-repeated green lace gown and her Floral Aigrette Tiara.)

Lalla Salma is exquisite as always, and Clotilde is wearing another Elie Saab (but I have to dock her for not pairing it with the family pink tourmaline tiara, tsk tsk). But Fabiola wore a little flower pin in her hair. C’mon, that’s adorable.

I can’t decide between Mathilde in that stunning blue and Astrid in her emerald Elie Saab, so we’ll call it a draw. I can decide, however, that I do not care for Claire’s mullet dress.

Best in We Only Want to Talk About Your Tiara Anyway

Well, it’s true. But Victoria wins this anyway, for repeating the magical Elie Saab she wore to the 2010 Nobel Prizes.

And on that note, let’s get to the tiara business.

The Tiara Rundown

The best kind of tiara events are those that either answer old questions or pose new ones, and this dinner did both, bless its heart. Answering questions was Sibilla, who wore Queen Victoria Eugenia’s Aquamarine Tiara. There were rumors earlier this year that her family had sold it to King Juan Carlos for Queen Sofia, and this was a tidy way to kill that speculation off. Also answering a question was Princess Caroline, who dug two tiaras out of storage, the Cartier Pearl Drop and Charlotte’s Russian Fringe (for her necklace). I wondered if any of the significant family tiaras would go to Charlene, but it appears that answer is no. And posing new questions for us is Victoria: What is that on her head, hmm? It’s no Swedish tiara I’m familiar with, and it is not the tiara of Countess Estelle Bernadotte that the family is rumored to have bought back. There’s also a hair comb at the back. Delicious mystery!

I was hoping the Luxembourg ladies would empty the vault, and it looks like they did! Stéphanie made her tiara debut in the larger floral tiara, Maria Teresa went for the Chaumet necklace tiara, Margaretha chose the Art Deco aquamarine bandeau, Marie Astrid wore the emerald and diamond necklace tiara that belonged to her mother, and Diane (she's the wife of Prince Jean, one of the groom's uncles) borrowed the small version of Sibilla’s Art Deco Tiara. Good teamwork, ladies, good teamwork.

Thoroughly typical selections out of Belgium, with Paola in Elisabeth’s Art Deco bandeau, Mathilde in her laurel wreath, Claire in her pearl and diamond tiara worn for the third time, and Astrid in the Savoy Aosta Tiara. From Greece, Anne-Marie brought the romantic Khedive Tiara, and Marie-Chantal was back to her typical fringe.

From the Norwegian vault came Queen Maud’s Pearl and Diamond Tiara for Sonja, the trusty Diamond Daisy for Mette-Marit, and King Olav’s Gift Tiara (her only personal diadem) for Märtha Louise. Máxima went with the Mellerio Ruby Tiara, and Silvia brought her party antlers (a.k.a. the Nine Prong Tiara).

And to finish us out, some little known diamond tiaras: Sarvath in her regular tiara, Crown Princess Margarita of Romania wore the Romanian Greek Key Tiara, Katherine wore a small tiara which I believe she also wore to the Swedish royal wedding, the Duchess of Braganza wore a petite necklace tiara, and Miriam wore what I believe is the same tiara she wore to Frederik and Mary's wedding.

Late updates, ladies we did not see arriving: Princess Alexandra in the small floral tiara, and Princess Tessy in a new (to her) tiara, Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde's Tiara which is a favorite of Maria Teresa. And Mary brought her rubies and a new way to wear the ruby necklace! I love that she's playing with her toys. (Even more ladies in red, see what I'm saying?)

UPDATES: Some more gowns, and a new (to her) tiara on Sophie! I originally thought this might be the Strathmore Rose Tiara with sapphires, but it's an aquamarine tiara once worn by the Queen. Her necklace is also borrowed from the Queen, which is interesting - lots of new loans for Sophie!

Royal Fashion Awards: The Civil Wedding in Luxembourg

Are we ready for some royal/grand ducal wedding fun, or what?! Guillaume of Luxembourg is marrying Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy: civil wedding and dinner today, religious wedding tomorrow. We begin with the civil wedding, with royal attendance limited to family for now.

Guillaume and Stéphanie had an engagement this morning, for which Stéphanie sported I Dream of Jeannie hair and divine deep wine Diane von Furstenberg. For the civil wedding, she wore ivory Chanel. I'm loving the clothes and wishing I could fuss with the accessories, but I liked her gleeful, crowd-friendly attitude best of all anyway.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa

Maria Teresa's wearing Natan for the wedding, but you just knew she'd sneak in some Elie Saab somewhere (that's my girl!). This is stunning, this ornamented gold coat and dress, and that's why I love her in Saab.

Not exactly the right cut for Alexandra in that Dior, and a bit of a dull color and shape for Tessy in her Ralph Lauren. I'm going with Alex for the win, as I just can't quite make amends with the business suit jacket on Tessy. But bless their hearts, they tried to shake it up a bit for the occasion.
