100 Years of  Hungarian Scout Association

Magyar Posta has issued  a commemorative miniature sheet with a surcharge in honour of the centenary of the foundation of the Hungarian Scout Association. The stamp designs of the miniature sheet are graphic compositions related to scouting, the world jamboree, leadership training, the scout salute and the scout symbol.

Magyar Posta devotes the proceeds from the surcharge – HUF 100 for each miniature sheet, which may not be used to pay for postage – to supporting youth stamp collecting.

 

The first scout camp began on 1 August 1907 on Brownsea Island in the south of England. The movement, founded by Robert Baden-Powell in 1907, appeared in Hungary in 1910. The Hungarian Scout Association was established on 28 December 1912. Hungary was a founder member of the International Scout Bureau (today WOSM) as well as the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, which was established in Parád in 1928. Hungarian scouts first took part in a world jamboree in Copenhagen in 1924, where they came third in the competition behind the British and the Americans.

In 1926 the first Hungarian national jamboree was organised, which was attended by 10,000 people. In 1927 the Association set up a centre for the highest scout training among other activities at Hárshegy. By then the Association also owned a central national building, a sea scout centre on the Danube and a national network of scout shops. In 1933 Hungary organised the 4th World Scout Jamboree in the park of the royal palace in Gödöllő, where 26,000 scouts from 46 countries took part. Between 1948 and 1989 the movement was banned by the government in Hungary, and Hungarian scouting continued either illegally or in emigration. After the change of political system, on 11 February 1989 the Hungarian Scout Association was the very first social organisation to be registered at the Metropolitan Court of Budapest. 

At present the Hungarian Scout Association has 10 scout districts. Each district is divided into areas, which operate their own scout groups. Irrespective of geographical area, there are specialised branches of the scout movement, such as the sea scouts and the air scouts, where scouts can learn about their particular interest. The training takes place in small communities called patrols, which are run by young leaders. Several patrols with members of similar age are overseen by an adult. The leaders are given their assignments dependent on different levels of training.

New stamps on Scouts and Guides..

To mark Centenary of Costa Rica’s Guides and Scouts, on 28 Oct 2011, Costa Rica Post has issued souvenir sheet of two stamps with face value 340 colones of each. The stamps feature a campground and bonfire.

Scouting was founded in Costa Rica in 1915 and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1925. Guiding started in 1922 and became a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1981. The association has more than 10,000 youth members of both genders and about 2,000 adult volunteers .

An interesting aspect of Scouting in Costa Rica is a University course on Scouting. This course is mandatory for all future teachers. The course highlights the educational value of Scouting.

Scouting in Costa Rica has an emphasis on community service, rural Scouting and nature conservation projects. The Association has a National Office and 8 regional offices throughout 9 regions of Costa Rica Each regional office has a regional executive that links the region to the National Office.

New Stamp on Scouting..

Thailand Post issued a commemorative stamp on 100th anniversary of the national Scouting organization of Thailand.

Scouting was founded in Thailand in 1911 and was among the charter members of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1922. In 2011 the organization has 1,257,645 members and is open to boys and girls. Scouting in Thailand is unique in that it is part of the school curriculum and receives strong support from the Thai government and people. Even the Royal Family are keen members.

The Pongal Festival

Pongal is the only festival of Hindu that follows a solar calendar and is celebrated on the fourteenth of January every year. Pongal has astronomical significance: it marks the beginning of Uttarayana, the Sun's movement northward for a six month period. In Hinduism, Uttarayana is considered auspicious, as opposed to Dakshinaayana, or the southern movement of the sun. All important events are scheduled during this period. Makara Sankranthi refers to the event of the Sun entering the zodiac sign of Makara or Capricorn. In Hindu temples bells, drums, clarinets and conch shells herald the joyous occasion of Pongal.

To symbolize a bountiful harvest, rice is cooked in new pots until they boil over. Some of the rituals performed in the temple include the preparation of rice, the chanting of prayers and the offering of vegetables, sugar cane and spices to the gods. Devotees then consume the offerings to exonerate themselves of past sins. Pongal signals the end of the traditional farming season, giving farmers a break from their monotonous routine. Farmers also perform pooja to some crops, signaling the end of the traditional farming season. It also sets the pace for a series of festivals to follow in a calendar year. In fact, four festivals are celebrated in Tamilnadu for four consecutive days in that week.

The Pongal festival is celebrated for four days. The first day, Bhogi, the old clothes and materials are thrown away and fired, marking the beginning of a new life. 'Bhogi' is celebrated on January 13,

The second day, the Pongal day, is celebrated by boiling fresh milk early in the morning and allowing it to boil over the vessel - a tradition that is the literal translation for Pongal. People also prepare savories and sweets, visit each other's homes, and exchange greetings. 'Pongal' on Jan 14,

The third day, Mattu Pongal, is meant to offer thanks to the cows and buffaloes, as they are used to plough the lands. 'Mattu Pongal' on Jan 15.

On the last day, Kanum Pongal on Jan 16 people go out to picnic. A festival called Jalli kathu is held in Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Tanjavur,all in Tamil Nadu, on this day. Bundles of money are tied to the horns of Pongal ferocious bulls which the villagers try to retrieve. Everyone joins in the community meal, at which the food is made of the freshly harvested grain. This day is named and celebrated as Tamilian Tirunal / 'Thiruvalluvar Day in a fitting manner through out Tamil Nadu. Thus, the harvest festival of Pongal symbolizes the veneration of the first fruit. The crop is harvested only after a certain time of the year, and cutting the crop before that time is strictly prohibited. Even though Pongal was originally a festival for the farming community, today it is celebrated by all. However, Coinciding with Pongal Makara Sankranti , Lohri and Bihu in Assam is very much the same tradition as Pongal. It just shows the unity in diversity of our country.

People are different.
Festivals are different.
But Celebration is one.

Centenary of Girl Guiding…

Gibraltar Post has issued  a set of 4 stamps  to commemorate Centenary of Girl guiding . The stamps depict the uniforms, badges and other identifiable features of the Girl guiding age-groups - Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section.

 

    

 Girl guides or Girl Scouts is a parallel movement to Scouting. It evolved from the Scouting movement in the early years of the 20th century. Girls were attracted to Scouting since its inception in 1907 when Robert Baden-Powell, a famous army general, tried out his ideas for training boys at a camp on Brownsea Island in 1907 and the following year published them in a book, ‘Scouting for Boys’.

 

Baden Powell wanted to create a separate identity for the girls so that they could work for self-development independently, not in imitation of their brothers. He decided that the name should change and the name ‘Guide’ was taken from a famous frontier regiment in the British Indian Army, the Corps of Guides, which was noted for its skills in tracking and survival. Baden-Powell’s sister, Agnes, was charged with the task and the Girl Guides were founded in the UK in 1910.

Two central themes have been present from the earliest days of the movement: domestic skills and “a kind of practical feminism which embodies physical fitness, survival skills, camping, citizenship training, and career preparation”. These two themes have been emphasised differently at different times and by different groups, but have remained central to Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting.Guiding has come a long way since then – the movement has travelled all over the globe with over 10 million members worldwide. Internationally it is governed by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts with member organizations in 144 countries.
