Today,  14th July 2012  is 150th Birth Anniversary of the great Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt

His famous painting ‘The Kiss’ shown above on stamp is a symbol of Vienna Secession. Influenced by European avant-garde movements represented in the annual Secession exhibitions, Klimt's mature style combined richly decorative surface patterning with complex symbolism and allegory, often with overtly erotic content.

Gustav Klimt's style is highly ornamental. The Art Nouveau movement favored organic lines and contours. Klimt used a lot of gold and silver colors in his art work - certainly an heritage from his father's profession.

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was one of the most innovative and controversial artists of the early twentieth century. Klimt’s highly decorative, erotic female figures were influenced by an enormous range of sources: classical Greek art, Byzantine mosaics, late-medieval painting, the woodcuts of Albrecht Durer, photography and the Symbolist art of Max Klinger. The Nouveau Art movement in Austria was called the Secession. As a co-founder of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists and architects who formed their own exhibition society and denounced the classical academic training of the time, his work embodied the high-keyed erotic, psychological and aesthetic preoccupations of fin-de-siècle Viennese intellectuals.

Here is a beautiful set of stamps issued by Polish Post featuring the works of famous Polish artist Michal Batory now settled in Paris. His designs are very unusual and most of his work shows human body parts as art objects. In these two stamp  designs lips and nails are featured as art objects.These stamps are perfect collectible items for art lovers !!

Michal Batory is a famous graphic designer in France.   Michel Batory often works for theatre companies like "le theâtre CHAILLOT" and created a big advertising campaign for it.  His art is his work with the human body : he diverts it and uses it like an object. He uses it in funny or strange positions. On the flip side, he uses objects or food as if they were human. He adds human body parts like hands, eyes or arms.

 

His posters are a shake-up of collage using objects and typography in movement words are used like subjects or pictures.The typography is original, funny and dynamic. You could say that Michal Batory changes and confuses codes of conventional typography.

He uses words not only for information, but also to participate in the picture and accentuate it. Each emotion felt in the poster is the emotion of the theatrical work he is illustrating. In the photo (the mouth), one can suppose that the piece of theatre will be about woman and her sensuality.

Michal Battory is a sensitive artist who uses objects and emotions in a thoughtful manner.

Warli and Shekhawati Painting

India Post issued a set of 2 stamps and a Sheetlet on 20th June 2012   featuring  Shekhawati and Warli Paintings.Shikhawati painings are specific Rajasthani art where as Worli Paintings are from Maharashtra.

 

The Warlis or Varlis are an indigenous tribe or Adivasis, living in Mountainous as well as coastal areas of Maharashtra-Gujarat border and surrounding areas.They have their own animistic beliefs,life,customs and traditions,as a result of acculturation they have adopted many Hindu beliefs. The Warlis speak an unwritten Varli language which belong to the southern zone of the Indo-Aryan languages.

Warli folk paintings are the painting of Maharashtra. Warli is the name of the largest tribe found on the northern outskirts of Mumbai, in Western India. The word “ Warli” comes from “warla” which means a piece of land or a field Despite being in such close proximity of the largest metropolis in India, Warli tribesmen are still not urban. Warli Art was first discovered in the early seventies. While there are no records of the exact origins of this art, its roots may be traced to as early as the 10th century AD. Warli is the vivid expression of daily and social events of the Warli tribe of Maharashtra, used by them to decorate the walls of village houses. This was the only means of transmitting folklore to a others who are not acquainted with the written word.

Shekhawati painting originate from Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, known as the open-air art gallery of Rajasthan .It is popular in the districts of Jhunjhunu, Chiru, and Sikar. They were hugely popular during their era, such was the demand that the skilled artists couldn't paint fast enough. Even masons tried their hands at the paintings giving them a wonderful naivete and humorous touch. The subject matters of these paintings vary tremendously, from mythological stories and epics such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata to the local legends of battles and hunts, nearly all of which has been painted over.

Children’s Day

Date of Issue : 14 November 2011

India Post issued a set of two stamps and a Miniature sheet today to commemorate Children’s Day. The design of stamps feature winning entries of ‘Design a Stamp’ competition organized by India Post on 12.12.2010 as one of the special events of INDIPEX 2011. The theme of this contest was “Save the Tiger” . Tiger is one of the most endangered species and and is on the verge of extinction.

Romare Bearden art work on stamps..

US Postal Service issued a set of four on 28 September featuring art work of renowned artist Romare Bearden .

Romare Bearden (1911-1988) was one of the 20th century's most distinguished American artists. His art has been praised for depicting the complexities of African-American experience while addressing universal themes, and is in the permanent collections of major museums across the nation. Though he created works in many media, he is particularly celebrated for his groundbreaking approach to collage. Using various materials, including cut papers, foil, and fabrics, he transformed collage into a forceful means of expression with mainstream appeal.

Four collages by Bearden, have been features on the Romare Bearden (Forever) stamp sheet.

Conjunction (1971) is a large work showing a Southern social scene, reflecting Bearden's recollections of his early childhood. The work celebrates the human activity of connecting through touch and conversation, and pays homage to the Southern quilt-making tradition suggested by the fabrics of the women's brightly patterned dresses.

Odysseus: Poseidon, The Sea God—Enemy of Odysseus (1977) is one of many images by Bearden based on literary sources. Poseidon was the archenemy of Odysseus in Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey; his image here reveals Bearden's deep exploration of the human condition.

 

Prevalence of Ritual: Conjur Woman is one of a series of important collages Bearden made in 1964. The power and dignity of the black woman was a central theme in his work, and the spiritual and mysterious "conjur" woman was a recurring subject.

 

Falling Star (1979) juxtaposes the ordinary, a domestic interior, with the marvelous, as seen through its windows. Bearden uses layers of meaning in this work, addressing universal human experience.

Bearden was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, but grew up in New York City. His parents had hoped he would study medicine, but he ultimately earned a degree in education in 1935. For many years, he worked as a caseworker with the New York City Department of Social Services and painted in the evenings, making an ever-expanding study of world art. He wrote lyrics for songs, including the hit "Seabreeze," and designed album covers, costumes, and stage sets. He was also a respected scholar and writer. In 1969, Bearden's income as an artist finally allowed him to leave his day job.

He was recognized with many honors including the National Medal of Arts, awarded in 1987, and election to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1972.

Stamp Booklets on Tagore

 

Kolkata Philatelic Club issued Stamp Booklets celebrating 150th Birth anniversary celebration of Rabibindranath Tagore during  Painting and stamp exhibition on  Tagore held in the month of May this year. These Booklets have been designed by noted philatelist  and artist of Kolkata, Shri Dipok Dey. The booklets contain recent stamps on Tagore  issued by India Post. The booklets feature Tagore’s association with Argentina, Music, cinema and world personalities. Nobel Laureate Tagore’s literary and art  work  is  admired all over the world.
