Definitive 2012 'Birds of the Rock'

Red-necked Nightjar (Caprimulgus ruficollis) Two species of Nightjar are found in Europe, both of which migrate past Gibraltar. The Red-necked Nightjar breeds only in the western Mediterranean and migrates to tropical Africa during the autumn, returning in the late spring. They are most frequently seen in Gibraltar during levanter conditions. This species feeds mainly on nocturnal flying insects and breeds primarily in open woodlands, favouring Stone Pine woods, which echo at night with its distinctive call.

Little Owl (Athene noctua) This owl, which is found from North Africa and Western Europe to China, is the most common nocturnal bird of prey in Gibraltar. 8-12 pairs breed in cliff habitat around the Rock, and less frequently in holes in old walls. They prey on insects, reptiles and small mammals, and can sometimes be seen during daylight hours. Clutches consist of 3-5 eggs. Little Owls are not migratory and birds are present all year round.

Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata) This is a migratory species that spends the winter in tropical Africa and returns to Europe to breed in the late spring. Although declining throughout part of its range, the Spotted Flycatcher is a common migrant in Gibraltar. The species began to breed in the Botanic Gardens in 2009 and has done so ever since. Clutch size normally consists of 4-6 eggs. Up to three young have been reared in Gibraltar. In spite of its name the Spotted Flycatcher is streaked rather than spotted.

RMS Titanic was a passenger liner that struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, and sank on 15 April 1912, resulting in the deaths of 1,517 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

The largest passenger steamship in the world at the time, the Olympic-class Royal Mail Ship RMS Titanic was owned by the White Star Line and constructed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland, UK. After setting sail for New York City on 10 April 1912 with 2,223 people on board, she hit an iceberg four days into the crossing, at 11:40 pm on 14 April 1912, and sank at 2:20 am on the morning of 15 April. The high casualty rate resulting from the sinking was due in part to the fact that, although complying with the regulations of the time, the ship carried lifeboats for only 1,178 people. A disproportionate number of men died due to the "women and children first" protocol that was enforced by the ship's crew.

Titanic was designed by experienced engineers, using some of the most advanced technologies and extensive safety features of the time. The sinking of a passenger liner on her maiden voyage, the high loss of life and media frenzy over Titanic's famous victims, the legends about the sinking, the resulting changes in maritime law, and the discovery of the wreck have all contributed to the enduring interest in Titanic.

Titanic_poster

Titanic is a 1997 American epic romance and disaster film directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. A fictionalized account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, it stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson, Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater, Gloria Stuart as Old Rose, and Billy Zane as Rose's fiancé, Cal Hockley. Jack and Rose are members of different social classes who fall in love aboard the ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage.

New stamps on Christmas and New Year …

2012 - The Year of Dragon

Korea

image

Date of Issue: 1 December 2011

The year of 2012 is the year of the dragon.

Dragon is the creature of legends, the dragon is described to have an immense body of a snake, the horns of a deer, the ear of a cow, scaly skin, and four legs.Since ancient times, the dragon has been associated to greatness, thus symbolizing royal authority or the throne. Almost everything associated with kings was preceded by the prefix of “yong” (dragon) such as Yongan (king’s face), Gollyongpo (king’s ceremonial attire), Yongsang (the low wooden bench on which the King sat), etc.
The dragon has been positioned as an auspicious symbol in daily life: a dream of forthcoming conception that involves a dragon led to the expectation of the baby growing up to be a great man; farmers worshipped the dragon as the god of water that governs the success of their harvest; fishermen worshipped the dragon as the Dragon King that governs the sea.

This stamp set features following endangered animals :

The Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) is the only living species of the genus Elephas and distributed in Southeast Asia from India in the west to Borneo in the east. Since 1986, it has been listed as endangered by IUCN as the population has declined by at least 50% over the last three generations, estimated to be 60–75 years. The species is threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation.

The Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), is a species of rhinoceros, native to the eastern and central areas of Africa including Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Angola. Recent conservation success has led to very gradual population increases to about 4,000 after a long and devastating period of hunting and poaching. However, the species remains Critically Endangered due to the strong demand for rhinoceros horn for traditional Asian medicines.

The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a bear native to central-western and south western China. The giant panda lives in a few mountain ranges in central China, mainly in Sichuan province, but also in the Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. The panda is a conservation reliant endangered species. Wild population is estimated at about 1,590 individuals living in the wild.

The Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), is a tiger subspecies native to India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, and has been classified as endangered by IUCN as the population is estimated at fewer than 2,500 individuals with a decreasing trend. None of the Tiger Conservation Landscapes within the Bengal’s tiger range are large enough to support a population size of 250.

The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) is a bear native largely within the Arctic Circle encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. The polar bear is classified as a vulnerable species, with eight of the 19 polar bear subpopulations in decline. For decades, large scale hunting raised international concern for the future of the species but populations rebounded after controls and quotas began to take effect.

The Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) is one of the two species of orangutans. Found only on the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia, it is rarer and smaller than the Bornean orangutan. In the wild, Sumatran orangutans survive in the province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD), the northernmost tip of Sumatra. The species has been assessed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2000. It is considered one of “The World’s 25 Most Endangered Primates.”

Stamp on Commonwealth Games by Gibraltar

gib 2

Date of Issue – 20 October 2010

Hi ! It is interesting to note that Gibraltar issues a Miniature Sheet on CWG today when the games have already been over a week earlier.  I wrote on my Blog sometimes back that it was issued on 20 August 2010 as the same  date appeared  on their website on a FDC. However the date of issue on their website was given 20 October. But it gave the impression to visitors that the date was wrongly mentioned. This date (20 August 2010) seems quite correct as the stamp issued to mark an event should have been released either during the event or before the event. Today the website of Gibraltar Post announces the release of above MS today i.e. on 20 October. It proves that the date of issuance of stamps are not only postponed in India but in other countries too due to certain reasons better known to them. However  a commemorative stamp issued  after the event  loses its importance. This is all for Today….Till Next Post….Have a Nice Time !!

Naval Aviation

Date of Issue - 15 March 2009

Hi ! Here are the most beautiful and thrilling stamps on Naval Aviation issued by Gibraltar on 15 March 2009. A set of 6 stamps and a beautiful Miniature sheet commemorate Centenary of Naval Aviation. Gibraltar has been a critical centre of naval operations since first being ceded to Britain in 1713, and over this time, it has witnessed many changes to the feet and how it is operated. The past hundred years have seen the most changes, and it is by no small measure, that some of these have been as a result of having the ability to project power against an aggressor or by providing support to those in need, using aircraft and specially trained crews than can operate equally well from ships at sea or from land. Here are some nice pictures of Naval Aviation depicted on these stamps. Well, The stamps issued by Gibralter are wonderful with bright colour combination. Though the theme is 'aval Aviation' but the brightness of colours can be seen on all stamps. To see them I just can say -" These are fantastic and a collector's Delight !" Sure to be liked by collectors of Aviation and watercraft theme. Here are the nice stamps, Miniature sheet and FDCs. This is all for today !......Till Next Post....Have a Nice Time !.....
