New stamps on Birds…

2012  stamps from Estonia

Bird of the Year – Plover

image

The Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula) mainly inhabits  natural landscapes on the seashore and sea islands. The population of the Ringed Plover has contracted from at least 8,000 couples to 1,000 or 2,000 during the past 50 years. Perhaps disappearance of suitable places of nestling on the seashore and robbery are some of the reasons why we find the Ringed Plover more and more frequently nestling in the inland.

The Little Ringed Plover (Charadrius dubius) as a typical inland snipe populates mainly manmade places such as gravel pits, limestone quarries etc. Although the global contraction in the population of the species is connected with climate change, the link between the intensiveness of human activity and the population of the Little Ringed Plover is clearly positive. On the basis of recent population assessments there are 1,000 to 2,000 pairs of Little Ringed Plovers nestling in Estonia.

image

Date of Issue : 24 March 2012

Cherry Blossom Centennial stamps by USPS

This unique, panoramic stamp commemorates Tokyo's gift of cherry blossom trees to the city of Washington D.C. as a sign of growing friendship between Japan and the United States of America.

In 2012, the U. S. Postal Service commemorates the centennial of the gift of more than 3,000 cherry blossom trees from the city of Tokyo to the city of Washington, D.C with the Cherry Blossom Centennial (Forever) stamp design. The two stamps, which are near mirror images, form the left and right halves of a panoramic view of blooming cherry trees surrounding the Tidal Basin. The stamp on the left depicts blossoming trees arching over two girls dressed in bright kimonos, and a family on a stroll with the Washington Monument in the background. On the second stamp, the Jefferson Memorial forms the backdrop for tourists taking in the sights under a canopy of pink blooms.

Joint Issue : Israel and China

image

To be issued on 20 March 2012

Hi !

Here is a very cool and beautiful  set of stamps to be issued by Israel Post  on 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and China. It is a joint issue between Israel and China. I am pleased to write that a Joint issue between India and Israel will be issued in December 2012.

During the course of these 20 years, trade between the two countries has developed rapidly and the number of Israeli companies in China and joint ventures continues to rise. The majority of this trade is in the realm of information and telecom technologies, agro-technology, water and ecology.

The Israeli stamp features a white dove - the "dove of peace" and the Chinese stamp features a waxwing - the "bird of peace". Each stamp also features an element from each country's national flag: a Star of David and a pentagram.

On 01/10/11 I have hosted a website which displays my exclusive Gandhiji's collections. This bilingual (both Tamil & English) website was inaugurated by Mr.V.Kalyanam who was then Gandhiji's personal secretary. This website contains Gandhiji's memorabilia such as Stamps, coins, currencies, tokens, telephone cards, post cards, special covers, statues and a few rare photo graphs too. Since more than 120 countries have honored Gandhiji by issuing stamps. Personally I believe that today's younger generation who surfs through this site would be really attracted towards Gandhiji and his principles. My dream of spreading Gandhian principle across the globe has resulted in www.gandhiworld.in .

Joint stamp issue between South Africa and Indonesia

South Africa and Indonesia have jointly released a stamp issue marking 300 years of the link between the two countries. The stamps were officially launched on 15 October in Cape Town .

South Africa and Indonesia have only enjoyed formal diplomatic ties since August 1994, but the link between the two countries stretches back close to three hundred years. The colonisation of Africa and Asia by European powers from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries led to the enslavement of millions of Afro-Asian peoples, and an international slave trade. This slave trade led to the migration of large numbers of Asian and African people to different parts of the world. It was one such stream of people, most of whom were political exiles or prisoners who had opposed the colonisation of their countries that came to the Cape of Good Hope.

Joint Issue by Malta and Iceland

Date of Issue : 15 September 2011

Iceland and Malta Posts have issued a joint stamp on 15 September 2011.Iceland and Malta are the northernmost and southernmost islands in Europe. Fishing has been the main source of revenue for centuries on these two islands. Iceland Post and Malta Post have collaborated on a joint stamp issue occasioned by this relationship with fishing towns as the motif. The town of Húsavík is the motif of the Icelandic minisheet while the Maltese one depicts the town of Mgarr, Gozo.

Date of Issue : 15 September 2011

The Republic of Malta is a small and densely populated country on an island by the same name and some smaller islands in the Mediterranean. The islands are located between Italy in the north and the northcoast of Africa. The official languages are English and Maltese. Malta joined the European Union in 2004 and is now the smallest EU country both as regards size and population. Only three of the biggest islands are populated: Malta, Gozo and Comino.

This philatelic issue has ‘Fishing Villages’ as its theme which captures an important economic and cultural activity that is common to both countries. The village of Húsavík has been chosen for the Icelandic miniature sheet while the village of Mgarr, Gozo, is depicted on the Maltese sheet. Cedric Galea Pirotta was commissioned by both Iceland Post and Malta Post to paint both fishing villages.
