Weekly Royal Fashion Awards: Catching Up

Oh my. It's been...uh...some time since we talked regular royal fashion, what with all those royals going casual at the Olympics and then retreating for their summer holidays. We got the Paralympic outfits out of the way yesterday, let's have a massive round up from the rest of our leading ladies since whenever it was we last chatted, shall we? (Note: this is not every outfit.)

Most Family-Oriented Return
Princess Mathilde
Left to Right: A family photocall with the extended Belgian royal family; the first day of school.
Mathilde has returned to her royal engagement business, but first she had some family business to take care of: a massive family photocall, where pink seemed to be the name of the game, and taking the kids to school. Looking pretty mommy chic on the Mathilde scale, I'd say.

Strictest Return to Form
Princess Letizia
At the opening of a conference; visiting a business school
One simple sheath dress, one pantsuit. That's Letizia, in a nutshell.

Best Return to Princess Form
Crown Princess Mary
The inaguration of Campus Roskilde; the awarding of the Skt.Loye Prize; Visiting a kindergarten; at Circus Danneborg; A wreath-laying ceremony; Visiting two towns
Two hatted, gloved appearances: Mary's back in action, kids. Lovely mauve hat aside, though...my heart belongs to the orange Marc Jacobs. It's swishy! Jumpy claps. Mary gets bonus points for being a sporty royal too - and not a spectator sporty sort, à la the Olympics, but an actual sporty one: first, she swam in the channels of Copenhagen, wetsuit and all (she's patron of the Danish Swimming Federation), and then she played basketball. In heels and a hat, as you do. And it was adorable. Click here to see.

Best Use of Sporting Gear
Princess Máxima
At a conference; celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Maastricht School of Management; celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Pet'je af Foundation; swimming for ALS
Mary wasn't the only one wetsuit-ing up this week! Máxima was at it too, swimming in Amsterdam Canal for charity. But in Máxima's case, I think it might just be the highlight of her sartorial week, as the rest is meh. Colorful meh, but meh nevertheless.

Biggest Hodgepodge of a Week
Crown Princess Mette-Marit
At the confirmation of her son Marius; visiting Oslo Renovation for an introduction to municipal waste management; at the Fretex charity shop
Have you ever seen such a mix of royal outfits in one spot? Traditional in national dress, dressed up in saucy Prada heels...and a blazer over a Harvard t-shirt. I have no idea what one ought to wear to tour a municipal waste facility, but this strikes me as odd. Perhaps she should have investigated the wetsuit option.

Most Colorful Princess
Crown Princess Victoria
Opening Stockholm Fashion Week; the Polar Music Awards; awarding the Junior Water Prize; at the Export Hermes Awards; at an event for the Swedish Brain Foundation
Look at all that blissful color! It's enough to make you forgive a dodgy batch of shoe choices. (Clunky on multiple occasions and too much green at once. Dodgy.) Naturally, my favorite is the saucy yellow number - she always goes a little bit funky for this event - and the hair down. Down! Variety: it's the spice of life.

What's your favorite princess outfit for this week (or weeks, whatever)?

Week in Review: Princess Mathilde, 8-14 July

  1. Visiting Brusselse Zomerschool, 10 July.
  2. At the Flemish Diabetes Association, 12 July. Another print-tastic week for Mathilde, who manages to take all the saucy undertones out of leopard print.

Week in Review: Princess Mathilde, 1-7 July

  1. Arriving in Burundi to commemorate the country's 50 years of independence, 1 July.
  2. Watching the parade, 2 July. Some people pack a base color of blergh for a trip, Mathilde packs orange (she also wore orange to meet the country's second vice president).
  3. a) Final day in Burundi, 3 July, in b) a Diane von Furstenberg top. Check out Philippe, rocking out! Didn't know you had it in you, sir.

Week in Review: Princess Mathilde, 24-30 June

  1. Visiting German-speaking communities, 27 June. I both feel that this is reused from a plastic tablecloth my grandma used to have and feel that I might like it, so that's weird.
  2. At a performance to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp, 29 June. And a Week of Prints it is!

Week in Review: Princess Mathilde, 10-16 June

  1. Day 1 of her visit to Japan alongside her husband, Prince Philippe, 10 June.
  2. Day 2, 11 June, and I love this dress. The gray and the pop of yellow, picked up (for once) in only one accessory: A+.
  3. a) Day 3, 12 June, in b) Dries van Noten.
  4. Evening of day 3, 12 June. Her curtsey in those shoes makes me seriously nervous.
  5. Day 4, 13 June, and the clothes have descended into the wrinkled abyss. Happens on my vacations too, dear.

Week in Review: Princess Mathilde, 29 April-5 May

  1. a-c) At a gala dinner for the Breast International Group, 3 May. I usually prefer her in Armani, but this is kind of like a toga without all the fun.

Week in Review: Princess Mathilde, 11-17 March

1. Arriving in Vietnam for an economic mission with Prince Philippe, 11 March. I feel like if I look at this one too long, I might get pulled through the rabbit hole. That is a whole lot o' stripes, my friend.
2. Still on Day 1 of the visit, 11 March. Oh, much better. Fresh and lovely in Dries van Noten.
3. Day 2, 12 March.
4. Evening of day 2 at an official government dinner, 12 March.

5. Day 3, 13 March.
6. An official reception on day 3, 13 March. Gorgeous color!

Week in Review: Princess Mathilde, 4-10 March

  1. a and b) Commemorating the 500th anniversary of the birth of Gerard De Kremer (Gerardus Mercator), 4 March. Fact: in the chilly months you are likely to catch yours doing her gallivanting in a houndstooth coat. I love it. Mine, however, is not a former member of a maternity wardrobe.
  2. Visiting a women's home, 6 March.
  3. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Payoke, 8 March. ANNOUNCEMENT: this is one of my all-time favorite Mathilde outfits. That is all.

Week in Review: Princess Mathilde, 26 February-3 March

  1. a) At a UNICEF Children's Fund conference, 27 February, in b) Emporio Armani.
  2. a and b) Visiting an educational center, 28 February. I really want to like this explosion of pattern, but I can't help thinking that she wrapped herself in a 1970s rug before she left the house. At least it's not shag, I guess.

Week in Review: Princess Mathilde, 12-18 February

  1. Paying a visit to a school, 13 February, in the most perfect green. Oh, I love this shade. GREEN, just like Kermit intended it.
  2. a and b) Visiting Hainaut, 15 February. The mustardy boots didn't die, even though many of you willed it to happen. Try again.
  3. At that oddly dress-coded mass, 16 February.

Week in Review: Princess Mathilde, 5-11 February

  1. Visiting HUB Brussels, 9 February.
  2. a and b) Attending a symposium, 10 February. First a leather dress, and now a fancy neck ruffle...she may be dressed in black, but I have a feeling Mathilde was feeling a little saucy last week.
