Philatelic Exhibition on Monuments by ASI…

 

Archeological Survey of India (ASI) is organising a Stamp Exhibition from 19 May to 17 July 2012 on Indian Monuments, Museums, Paintings and other historical items on philately. The Subject of the Exhibit may include Indian Cultural Heritage, Monuments, Museums, Coins, Antiquities and other related stamp and material telling a story about India and its culture. This exhibition will be a part of 150 years of ASI in India. The venue for the exhibition is Red Fort New Delhi and will be there for 2 months. It will be inaugurated by the Minister on 158h May 2012. About 20 frames by Indian Philatelists on invitation will be exhibited in this exhibition.

450 years of Market Law : Special Post carried  by Goat 

 

450 years back the small town Kaltennordheim got the right to hold regular market. In those time there was more regulation in such matters. May be it is also the first known date of existence for this town. There will be a festival for this purpose. Goats were  sold at this markets. But in May there will be a transport of postal items by a goat on 27th May 2012.

On 1th Jan a special stamp was issued for valentine’s Day and on the 6^th February a  stamp was issued  featuring a painting by Edward Hopper.

On the 13^th of February: a stamp dedicated to the Paris Mosque and a booklet entitled “Say it with Flowers”.

Great Mosque of Paris

The French Post has issued a stamp dedicated to the Great Mosque of Paris created and engraved by the famous French stamp designer, author of Marianne stamps Yves Beaujard.

After the First World War, the French government planned to build an Islamic institute in Paris for all Muslims in France to express the nation's commitment to 70,000 Muslim soldiers fallen for France, notably at Verdun. The Great Mosque of Paris was officially opened with much fanfare on July 15, 1926.

Today the Mosque is both a place of worship of Islam, a convivial place of religions of the Koran, but also a place to visit for tourists and school groups and a monument of art. The stamp is Commemorating the 90th anniversary of laying the foundation stone of the Great Mosque,

 

The French Post has issued a beautiful set of stamps in booklet form “say it with flowers”. for the  Valentine's Day!

These stamps were specially designed for the Day of lovers by Adeline Andre and manufactured by the French Post. They contain a quantity of elixir of love, you can choose between two assays and two different adhesive stamps. The effect of the patch varies among individuals on whom it is applied: immediate or delayed, weak or strong. These stamps - flowers offer you the opportunity to express immediately on the envelope your attraction with daisy, your tenderness with iris, your passion with red roses, and your sincere love with red and white tulips…

On the 20^th of February a stamp will be issued to commemorate Henri Queville.

A stamp for Mars?

 

The competition began !

CNES, French Space Agency, and the French Post Office, recognizing the interest of collectors, especially younger ones, for space are launching a competition to create a stamp which will make its route to the planet Mars! The French Post offers young people to invent a visual design of the stamp to write to the "Red Planet".

The design competition takes place from January 30 to April 16, 2012, for youth from 10 to 17 years. Numerous prizes are await of the winner, including a trip for two to Guyana provided by CNES and the opportunity to attend a launch of the Ariane rocket!

The design of the stamp to Mars can be achieved through different techniques such as collage, painting, drawing with crayons, markers.

French Post issued a stamp yesterday  to commemorate the Discovery of Insulin in the year 1921. Here is the detailed story behind Insulin that cures millions of diabetic patients…

Story behind INSULIN

In 1869 Paul Langerhans, a medical student in Berlin, was studying the structure of the pancreas under a microscope when he identified some previously unnoticed tissue clumps scattered throughout the bulk of the pancreas. The function of the “little heaps of cells”, later known as the islets of Langerhans, was unknown, but Edouard Laguesse later suggested they might produce secretions that play a regulatory role in digestion. Paul Langerhans’ son, Archibald, also helped to understand this regulatory role. The term “insulin” origins from insula, the Latin word for islet/island.

In 1889, the Polish-German physician Oscar Minkowski, in collaboration with Joseph von Mering, removed the pancreas from a healthy dog to test its assumed role in digestion. Several days after the dog’s pancreas was removed, Minkowski’s animal keeper noticed a swarm of flies feeding on the dog’s urine. On testing the urine, they found there was sugar in the dog’s urine, establishing for the first time a relationship between the pancreas and diabetes. In 1901, another major step was taken by Eugene Opie, when he clearly established the link between the islets of Langerhans and diabetes: “Diabetes mellitus… is caused by destruction of the islets of Langerhans and occurs only when these bodies are in part or wholly destroyed.” Before his work, the link between the pancreas and diabetes was clear, but not the specific role of the islets.

Over the next two decades, several attempts were made to isolate whatever it was the islets produced as a potential treatment. In 1906, George Ludwig Zuelzer was partially successful treating dogs with pancreatic extract, but was unable to continue his work. Between 1911 and 1912, E.L. Scott at the University of Chicago used aqueous pancreatic extracts, and noted “a slight diminution of glycosuria”, but was unable to convince his director of his work’s value; it was shut down. Israel Kleiner demonstrated similar effects at Rockefeller University in 1915, but his work was interrupted by World War I, and he did not return to it.

Nicolae Paulescu, a Romanian professor of physiology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, was the first to isolate insulin, in 1916, which he called at that time, pancrein, by developing an aqueous pancreatic extract which, when injected into a diabetic dog, proved to have a normalizing effect on blood sugar levels. He had to interrupt his experiments because the World War I and in 1921 he wrote four papers about his work carried out in Bucharest and his tests on a diabetic dog. Later that year, he detailed his work by publishing an extensive whitepaper on the effect of the pancreatic extract injected into a diabetic animal, which he called: “Research on the Role of the Pancreas in Food Assimilation”.

Only 8 months later, the discoveries he published were copied (or, as some say, confirmed) by doctor Frederick Grant Banting and biochemist John James Rickard Macleod, who were later awarded the Nobel prize for the discovery of insulin in 1923, which Paulescu discovered as early as 1916. By the time Banting also isolated insulin, Paulescu already held a patent for his discovery and he was the first to secure the patent rights for his method of manufacturing pancreine/insulin (April 10, 1922, patent no. 6254 (8322) “Pancreina şi procedeul fabricaţiei ei”/”Pancrein and the process of making it”, from the Romanian Ministry of Industry and Trade). Moreover, Banting was very familiar with Paulescu’s work, he even used Paulescu’s “Research on the Role of the Pancreas in Food Assimilation” as reference in the paper that brought him the Nobel.

The French Post has launched a stamp on 9 September, commemorating the foundation of the Council of Europe.The Council of Europe, created on May 5, 1949, is a political organization that seeks to promote democracy, human rights and the rule-of-law State. Its headquarters are in Strasbourg, and today the Council of Europe numbers 800 million citizens in 47 member states.

On 11 July French Post issued a stamp   commemorating its Presidency in the G20 . The G20 represents 85% of the global economy and two thirds of the world population. It is composed of South Africa, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, South Korea, the United States, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Russia, Turkey and finally the European Union. Its principle is based on a system of annual rotating presidency, and France has the honor to assume this responsibility in 2011.

World Judo Championship

Date of Issue : 5 July 2011

The World Judo Championships was held from 24 to 28 August 2011 at Bercy, Paris. The French Post has joined this event by issuing a semi panoramic stamp illustrating three different takes of the discipline and the Japanese ideogram meaning "the gentle way".

Judo is, nowadays, one of the most popular sporting activities in France. Martial art and combat sport of Japanese origin consist mainly of projection techniques, self-control, throttling, dislocation and immobilization.

Unique Honour for Dr.Prakash and Dr.Mandakini Amte – Postage Stamp by Kingdom of Monaco

Son of Baba Amte, Dr. Prakash Amte and his wife Dr. Mandakini run a school and a hospital at Hemalkasa village in the underprivileged district of Gadchiroli in Maharashtra where people belonging to the "Madia Gond" tribe live. After marrying Prakash, Mandakini left her governmental medical job and moved to Hemalkasa to eventually start a hospital, a school, and an orphanage for injured wild animals, including a lion and some leopards. Their two sons, Digant, a doctor, and Aniket, an engineer, have also dedicated their lives to the same causes as their parents. In 2008, Prakash and Mandakini were given the Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership.

Baba Amte's elder son Vikas and his wife Bharati run a hospital at Anandwan and coordinate operations between Anandwan and satellite projects.

In those days, leprosy was associated with social stigma and the society disowned people suffering from leprosy. There was also a widespread misbelief that leprosy was contagious. Amte strove to dispel the misbelief and once allowed bacilli from a leprosy patient to be injected into him while participating in an experimental test aimed at proving that leprosy was not contagious.

Today, Anandwan and Hemalkasa village have one hospital, each. Anandwan has a university, an orphanage, and schools for the blind and the deaf. Currently, the self-sufficient Anandwan ashram has over 5,000 residents. The community development project at Anandwan in Maharashtra is recognized around the world. Besides Anandwan, Amte later founded "Somnath" and "Ashokwan" ashrams for treating leprosy patients.

A French couple, Greet and Guy Barthelemy , who had worked with the Nobel Peace prize winner, Dr.Albert Schweitzer in the jungles of Africa, happened to visit Anandwan and Hemalkasa in 1993. They were so deeply impressed by the work of Dr.Prakash and Mandakini Amte, that they christened them as the Schweitzer couple of India.

After returning to France, they followed up the matter with the Kingdom of Monaco and persuaded them to bring out a stamp  in the honour of Dr.Prakash and Manda, just as it had brought out the stamp in 1955 to honour Dr.Albert Schweitzer. The Principality of Monaco, acceded to their request and did bring out a postage stamp in honour of the life and work of Dr.Prakash and Mandakini in 1995  - just as they had done for Dr.Albert Schweitzer in 1955. This was only the second time that the kingdom of Monaco brought out a stamp to honour a foreigner for its humanitarian work.

The specialty of the cover is that all stamps  used here bear country name and denominations in  different colors  of red green,blue and purple which glow on moving the cover and appear here black in the scan. La Poste commemorated Pierre de Fermat's  400th birth anniversary on a postage stamp in 2001

 

Hi ! Just received a mail from Mr Anurag Pratap of Silvassa about this news with the postage stamp issued by French Post…I wish  to share it with the readers …Some might have noticed it in 17th August 2011 in Google Doodle ….Those who have not noticed, might like the stamp issued on great “Amateur Mathematician” !  Mathematics  is a wonderful theme for the lovers of this subject ! This is all in this Post…Have a Nice Time !

The birthday of Pierre de Fermat, the 17th century French lawyer famous for the so-called 'Fermat's Last Theorem' mathematical puzzle, was celebrated in a Google Doodle on 17th August 2011. Because Ferment did not spread his work through books and journals and he often did not provide any proof for his theorems he was referred to as an 'amateur' mathematician, but that the same time Fermat is also considered to be one of the two (the other being Rene Descartes) leading mathematicians of the first half of the 17th century. Pierre de Fermat died at the age of 63 on January 12, 1665 at Castres, France.

Google doodles have gained immense popularity over the past few years and the Google team has put out commemorative doodles on events ranging from news events, civic milestones, birthdays, death anniversaries and important dates in history. Google estimates it has created more than 900 doodles since 1998, with 270 of them running in 2010.

The Doodle of  Pierre de Fermat shows a blackboard with algebraic symbols on it, with the word "Google" faintly visible as though rubbed out earlier. The symbols read: xⁿ + yⁿ ≠ zⁿ. If you hover your mouse over the Doodle, the pop-up text reads "I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this theorem, which this doodle is too small to contain."

Pierre de Fermat, was born on 17 August 1601, 410 years ago. A lawyer at the Parlement of Toulouse and a gifted amateur mathematician, he made breakthroughs in several fields of calculus, probability, geometry and number theory, but is best known for a brief note he made in the margin of a book of arithmetic. His enigmatic aside set the scene for perhaps the greatest mathematical mystery of all time.

500 Years of the Arrival of the Portuguese to Siam and the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations

Five centuries of unbroken relations from 1511 to 2011 between Portugal, the oldest established nation in the West, and Thailand, the only Southeast Asian State ever to be colonized,  go far beyond simple trade contacts and are a unique case in the annals of international relations, with diplomatic, political, military, religious, cultural and sociological dimensions. The relationship from the very beginning was one between equal nation states.

 
In the former capital, Ayutthaya, where a Portuguese district with churches and a mixed Luso Thai population long existed, generations of naval pilots, soldiers, interpreters and doctors loyally served the Kings of Siam. From the 16th to the 18th Century, portuguese was the lingua franca, and it was here that the Portuguese introduced technology and the skills of military construction, as well as European pharmacology and medicine.

Sia, was closely connected to the Asian possessions of the Portuguese Crown and received large and important embassies from Portuguese centres such as Malacca, Macau and Goa, The relations between the two countries remained unaltered, even during the troubled times of the war of liberation led by King Taksin – whose personal guard was provided by Portuguese military men – and Rama I, who received important military assistance from the Portuguese Queen Dona Maria I, in 1796.

In 1820, Siam and Portugal signed the first written treaty of modern times, ensuring Siam’s full integration in to the international community. During the period of the major reforms that took place during  the 19th century and the  beginning of the 20th century, under the reign of Rama V and Rama VI, many Portuguese from Macau settled in Bangkok acting as advisors to the Siamese government. Unlike other foreigners, they became Siamese citizens and received Thai citizenship. The history of this old alliance is an eloquent and pioneering example of fruitful dialogue between civilizations.

PHILANIPPON – 2011
World stamp exhibition, Yokohama city, Japan (28th July – 2nd August 2011)

Participating in Philanippon 2011 as a booth holder representing India, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka was a very pleasant experience. Being my first visit to Japan, I was excited on one hand but anxious on the other given the unfamiliar culture, taste and preferences and above all difference in language.

Exhibition hall was well organised and perfectly laid out providing sufficient displays and space for the visitors. The end of the exhibition hall featured rows of collections of various categories. One side of the hall had space for postal operators and the other side for domestic and international dealers. My most memorable moment was watching kids
engrossed in various activities spread across the exhibition hall. Another Interesting feature of the Exhibition was the presence of various security printer international and domestic who were giving out special souvenirs.

A special mention of Cartor Security printers - who had brought in their printing machine in the the exhibition hall. Visitors were provided hands-on demo and interesting souvenirs which was printed and perforated on spot was given as gift. Over the next few days as the crowd of stamp lovers increased, I am especially grateful to Japan Post for arranging a volunteer that provided assistance to us in the booth during the crucial hours of massive crowd.

Overall my experience of Phila Nippon, Japan post and Japan was of immense satisfaction. Starting from our arrival,hotel accommodation, exhibition and finally custom clearance and departure, I had never witnessed anything so smooth, well managed and professionally handled. In the face of great natural calamity faced by Japanese, organising an event of such magnitude with great efficiency is remarkable achievement in itself. My Heartiest gratitude to organizers of Phila Nippon and People of Japan for their services and hospitality which i shall carry with me for my life.
