Kennath Sequeira from Dubai shares here a nice souvenir sheet issued on a Match between Anand and Tapalov at FIDE World Chess Championship held in 2010 in Sofia, Bulagaria. The souvenir sheet also bears the name of   Vishwanathan Anand, the greatest Indian Chess player .

Anand defeated Boris Gelfand to win the Championship..

When Vishwanathan Anand made his meteoric rise in chess world in the 1980s, he was nicknamed The Lightening Kid for the speed with which he calculated complex chess moves and executed them. He used to complete in just about an hour, classical games in which players could use up to three and half hours of time.

Though over the years he has slowed down a bit and nowadays plays at a more sedate pace, Anand is still one of the best players in the world when it comes to the shorter version of chess, in which players get about 30 minutes each to complete the game.

Anand’s proficiency in speed chess paid rich dividend on Wednesday as he defeated his challenger Boris Gelfand of Israel in a four-game rapid chess tiebreaker to win his fifth World Championship title and to remain the undisputed king of the chess world.

Newly-crowned world chess champion Vishwanathan Anand received a gold medal, prize money of $1.4 million (around Rs. 7.9 crores), a memento and a piece of contemporary art displaying him and challenger Boris Gelfand, for his achievement at a ceremony on Thursday.

Olympic stamps from Royal Mail

Royal Mail will issue a special mini-sheet of stamps to coincide with the spectacular opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games on 27 July.

The sheet of four stamps features a quartet of Olympic sports: Diving, Fencing, Athletics and Cycling 'merged' with four iconic London landmarks: Tate Modern, Tower Bridge, the Olympic Stadium and the London Eye.

The two 1^st Class stamps feature a fencer's lunge meeting the walkway of Tower Bridge, while runners powering round the curve of a track, 'run' into the Olympic Stadium.

The £1.28 stamps show a diver's arrow-like vertical descent mirroring Tate Modern's imposing 325 foot chimney, while the London Eye's iconic Ferris Wheel becomes the front wheel of an Olympic racing bike.

Karpoor Chandra, “ Kulish ”

India Post issued a commemorative stamp on  Karpoor Chandra 'Kulish' today - 16th May 2012. He was the founder of Rajasthan Patrika Group which is one of  India’s leading Hindi Media Groups.

Karpoor Chandra was born on 20th of March, 1926 in Soda village of Tonk district of Rajasthan. He started his journalistic life in 1951 and the major turn in his life came in the year 1956 when he started an evening daily in the form of Rajasthan Patrika. Started with this small newspaper, developed into a big Media Group. Today, newspapers of this Group are published in over 30 editions in 7 states. Patrika family comprises of around 1 crore
and 94 lakhs readers per day.

He received “Haldi Ghati award” in 1983, “B.D Goenka award” in 1987, All India Editor's Guild Award” in 1999, “ Dr. Headgevar Pragya award” in 1993. He was also conferred with “Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi award”  He also composed 11 Vedas in a single volume which is considered as the largest and most bulky in terms of weight in the world.  He died on 17th Jan. 2006.

Great Indian Personalities

Mohammad Ali Jauhar

 

Mohammad Ali Jauhar (1878-1931) was an Indian Muslim leader, activist, scholar, journalist and poet, and was among the leading figures of the Khilafat Movement.

He was one of the founding members of All India Muslim League and its former president.

Mohammad Ali Jauhar is remembered as a fiery leader of many of India's Muslims. He is celebrated as a hero by the Muslims of Pakistan, who claim he inspired the Pakistan movement. But in India, he is remembered for his leadership during Khilafat Movement and the Non-Cooperation Movement (1919–1922) and his leadership in Muslim education.

The famous Muhammad Ali Road in south Mumbai, is named after him. He along with Gandhi traveled to Britain for attending round table conference sometimes in the 1930s. There he delivered his famous speech which included his wish not to get buried in 'slave India'. During the same tour he fell ill and died in London. Respecting his wish, his followers brought his dead body to Palestine, which was then a British Mandated territory (not in Turkish control), and buried him at Baitul Muqaddas. Many Indian Muslims with interest in history were wondering if his tomb is still intact. One Hyderabadi scholar Omar Khakidi who was working with MIT, Boston, found Ali's grave, which was still in good shape.

Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda (1863 -1902)  was the founder of the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. He is considered a key figure in the introduction of Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the "Western" World, mainly in America and Europe and is also credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the end of the 19th century. Vivekananda is considered to be a major force in the revival of Hinduism in modern India. He is perhaps best known for his inspiring speech which began: "Sisters and Brothers of America," through which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893.

Vivekananda arrived in Colombo on 15 January 1897 and received an ecstatic welcome. Here, he gave his first public speech in East, India, the Holy Land. From there on, his journey to Calcutta was a triumphal progress. He traveled from Colombo to Pamban, Rameshwaram, Ramnad, Madurai, Kumbakonam and Madras delivering lectures. People and Rajas gave him enthusiastic reception. In the procession at Pamban, the Raja of Ramnad personally drew the Swami's carriage.

On way to Madras, at several places where the train would not stop, the people squatted on the rails and allowed the train to pass only after hearing the Swami. From Madras, he continued his journey to Calcutta and continued his lectures up to Almora. While in the West he talked of India's great spiritual heritage, on return to India the refrain of his 'Lectures from Colombo to Almora' was uplift of the masses, eradication of the caste virus, promotion of the study of science, industrialization of the country, removal of poverty, the end of the colonial rule.These lectures have been published as Lectures from Colombo to Almora. These lectures are considered to be of nationalistic fervor and spiritual ideology. His speeches had tremendous influence on the Indian leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, Bipin Chandra Pal and Balgangadhar Tilak.

Sri Lanka issued the stamp on 15th Jan 1997 to mark 100 years of his visit to Colombo.

Tributes to Firaq Gorakhpuri

 

Today is death anniversary of great Urdu poet of India Firaq Gorakhpuri (28 August 1896 – 3 March 1982). His real name was Raghpati Sahay.He was born in 1896, in Gorakhpur.  Firaq had a taste of Urdu poetry at very tender age. He started writing poetry in Urdu in teens and developed his own niche in an era that was marked by the likes of Sahir, Iqbal, Faiz and Kaifi Azmi.

He was selected for the Provincial Civil Service (P.C.S.) and the Indian Civil Service (I.C.S.), but he resigned to follow Mahatma Gandhi's Non-cooperation movement, for which he went to jail. Later, he joined Allahabad University as a lecturer in English literature. It was there that he wrote most of his Urdu poetry, including his magnum opus Gul-e-Naghma which earned him the highest literary award of India, the Jnanpith Award, and also the 1960 Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu. During his life, he was given the positions of Research Professor at the University Grants Commission and Producer Emeritus by All India Radio. After a long illness, he died on March 3, 1982, in New Delhi.

As a distinguished poet, Firaq Gorakhpuri was well-versed in all traditional metrical forms such as ghazal, nazm, rubaai and qat'aa. He was a prolific writer, having written more than a dozen volumes of Urdu poetry, a half dozen of Urdu prose, several volumes on literary themes in Hindi, as well as four volumes of English prose on literary and cultural subjects.

Fraunhofer lines : The Rainbow lines

German Post issued a postage stamp on 2 January 2012 to commemorate 225th Birthday Joseph von Fraunhofer, The stamp features  the spectral lines called Fraunhofer lines. It is a beautiful   stamp showing Rainbow colors and one of the best stamps for my Rainbow Collection !!

The colors symbolize the solar spectrum with Fraunhofer lines.

In physics (optics) , the Fraunhofer lines are a set of spectral lines named after the German physicist Joseph von Fraunhofer (1787–1826). The lines were originally observed as dark features (absorption lines) in the optical spectrum of the Sun.

The Fraunhofer lines are typical spectral absorption lines. These dark lines are produced whenever a cold gas is between a broad spectrum photon source and the detector. In this case a decrease in the intensity of light in the frequency of the incident photon is seen as the photons are absorbed, then re-emitted in random directions, which are mostly in directions different from the original one. This results in an absorption line, since the narrow frequency band of light initially traveling toward the detector, has been effectively scattered in other directions. Absorption lines are produced even during reflection from an illuminated cold gas, since after reflection there is still the opportunity for a selective absorption (and re-scatter) between the point of reflection and the detector. By contrast, if the detector sees photons emitted directly from a glowing gas, then the detector often sees photons emitted in a narrow frequency range by quantum emission processes in atoms in the hot gas, resulting in an emission line. In the Sun, Fraunhofer lines are seen from gas in the outer regions of the Sun, which are too cold to directly produce emission lines of the elements they represent.

Bletchley Park puts its stamp on Turing Centenary.

On 23^rd February Bletchley Park will release four first day covers celebrating Alan Turing’s centenary year. Each will carry a single 1^st class Royal Mail “Turing Bombe” stamp cancelled with a unique first day of issue postmark.

The intention is to restrict the issue to just 500 of each. Produced in association with the Alan Turing Centenary Year Committee and Bletchley Park Post Office, proceeds will go towards supporting the preservation of Bletchley Park. The cover  can be previewed and ordered at bletchleycovers.com

The first design is by Rebecca Peacock of Firecatcher Design and the theme is Turing’s work on the mathematics of patterns. It was Turing’s genius for mathematics that made his work so vital to Bletchley Park and the development of modern computing.

The other three are original paintings by artist Steve Williams who has donated his work to Bletchley Park. They depict three buildings at Bletchley Park associated with Alan Turing. These are the cottage and hut where he worked and the room that housed the Bombe machines.

The stamp features a rebuilt Turing Bombe. The first day of issue postmark is a facsimile of one of the Bombe’s 36 rotor wheels.

MAHAPEX 2012 will be held at Wrestling Stadium, Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, Pune from 13 – 15 Jan 2012.

The programme committee has finalized the programme for MAHAPEX 2012 as under:

13 January 2012: Run for Stampino ( the mascot) by 800 school children along with a harkara carrying 500 letters to be sold later. Motto - Passing the philately Mashal (Torch) to the next generation. One head boy /girl will carry the Mashal (Torch), others will carry the placards. Change over of school children at every 500 Meter during Rally where banners will be displayed.

Hi ! Polish Post issued a beautiful souvenir sheet on 100 Years of Chemistry  NOBEL PRIZE To  Maria  Sklodowska - Curie. The souvenir sheet with two stamps of PLN 3 and PLN 7,70 features Marie Curie in lab and  the Nobel Prize medal. The FDC is very nicely designed and shows the periodic table of elements in which Ra ( Radium the  radioactive element invented by Marie Curie) is highlighted. This is the most beautiful FDC and Souvenir Sheet  issued on Marie Curie so far !! The  designer’s Great idea is highly appreciated !! This is all for Today …Till Next Post…Have a Great Time !!

President Smt. Pratibha Patil released a  postage stamp on Kavi Pradeep on 11th December 2011

A special commemorative postal stamp on Pt Kavi Pradeep, a noted poet whose songs played a major role during the country's freedom struggle, was released by President Smt Pratibha Patil on Sunday. The President  launched the stamp on December 11 at a simple function in Amravati, Maharashtra, in the presence of Law Minister Salman Khurshid and Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Sachin Pilot. It is the first step towards the preparation for Pt Kavi Pradeep's centenary celebrations which falls on February 6, 2015, Avinash Pande, Chairman of Kavi Pradeep Foundation, said .

The poet, originally known as Ramchandra Naryanji Dwivedi, was born in Badnagar in Ujjain district in Madhya Pradesh and had a passion for writing and rendering Hindi poetry. His songs like 'Aj Himalay ki choti se phir hamne lalkara hai...door hato ae duniyawalon hindustan hamara hai' played a crucial role in the country's freedom struggle. Kavi Pradeep also penned a song in tribute to soldiers who died in 1962 Sino-Indian War and was also a towering figure in Hindi cinema. During his film career spanning nearly five decades, Kavi Pradeep penned lyrics for 72 films like Bandhan (1940) and Jai Santoshi Ma (1975).
