50 Years of Friendship : New Zealand and Samoa

 

New Zealand Post will issue a set of five stamps and a souvenir sheet on 1st August 2012 to commemorate 50 Years of Friendship: New Zealand and Samoa

The links between New Zealand and Samoa not only stem from the fact that they are close Pacific neighbours, but are also due to the large number of New Zealanders of Samoan descent living in New Zealand. Samoans make up around 50 per cent of New Zealand’s Pacific Island population and the arts and culture of Samoa have become a distinctive voice in New Zealand society.

Each of the five stamps features a contemporary view of a selu tuiga – a head comb that takes the shape of a traditional tuiga. A tuiga is a Samoan headdress that is worn at important events by the mānaia (son) or the taupou (daughter) of the high chief of the village. The tuiga is a unique symbol of the chiefly nature of Samoan society, and a significant number of tuiga were worn when Samoa gained independence.

Elements of Samoa’s unique culture have been crafted by the stamp and coin designer, Michel Tuffery MNZM, into each of the selu tuiga featured on the stamps. These elements include key Samoan cultural frameworks, traditional Samoan arts, architecture, heritage and agriculture.

Michel Tuffery lives and works in Wellington, New Zealand (Aotearoa), and is a famous multi-disciplinary artist of Samoan, Rarotongan and Tahitian heritage. Tuffery has established himself as a diverse and critical creative practitioner within contemporary New Zealand and Pacific Island art, and his work features in major public and private collections globally.

The individual stamps in this issue are as follows:

70c - Fu'a

Fu’a is the Samoan word for flag and the fu’a of independence flies in front of the original Samoan Maota Fono or Parliament House. This Maota Fono was built in the shape of a circular Samoan meeting house. Chiefs and orators have discussed issues in a circular manner since time immemorial – making the form of the circle a traditional and sacred symbol.

$1.40 Niu

The coconut tree or niu is a very important tree for sustenance. For thousands of years, the lives of the Samoan people depended on this tree of life. It provided food, milk and oil as well as shelter, baskets and other woven artefacts used by Samoans in their everyday lives.

$1.90 - Maota

The Maota Fa’amasino or the Courthouse building is 110 years old, and one of the oldest buildings in the city of Apia. The building was built by the Germans in 1902 and has seen two foreign administrations (Germany and New Zealand) occupy it, before Samoans took over after gaining independence from New Zealand.

$2.40 - Tatau

Traditional Samoan tatau (tattoo) motifs and patterns are taken from nature. There are the tulī (godwit) bird, the centipede, the trochus shell and the ‘aso, the rafters of a fale on to which thatches are lashed, and a number of other shapes including a va’a (twohulled canoe) that sits at the top on the back of a male tatau.

$2.90 Malumalu

Malumalu ole Atua means ‘church building’ and the Catholic Church’s Immaculate Conception of Mary Cathedral at Mulivai was a symbol of spiritual sustenance that graced the shoreline of Apia Harbour. Sadly, the Cathedral was demolished after 127 years, when the 8.1-magnitude earthquake of September 2009 shook it to an irreparable state.

New stamps on XXX Olympiad London 2012

On 27 July, HONG KONG POST and Malta Post will issue a stamps commemorating the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Malta

The stamps by Malta Post , valued at ˆ0.37 and ˆ2.11, depict the 2012 Olympic Games logo and Wenlock, one of the Games' mascots.

The logo is a representation of the number 2012, with the Olympic Rings embedded within the zero. It was designed to have a flexible colour palate so as to enable corporate sponsors to integrate their own colours, but the standard hues are green, magenta, orange and blue. The logo will be used on Malta Post's ˆ0.37 stamp.

Meanwhile, one of the Games' two Official Mascots is Wenlock and he will take up pole position on MaltaPost's ˆ2.11 stamp. Wenlock and his co-mascot Mandeville (who will represent the Paralympic Games), were chosen from designs submitted by over 100 different international agencies. Wenlock's design incorporates a London taxi light, a camera that allows him to record everything and friendship bands in the five colours of the Olympic Rings.

“Rio+20" - Earth Summit 20

On 1 June 2012, the United Nations Postal Administration issued three commemorative stamps on the theme "RIO+20". A souvenir card was also released on the same day.

   

 

A souvenir card on the theme "RIO+20" was issued on 1 June 2012. The card depicts the new stamps and carries a statement by Secretary-General BAN Ki-Moon and Sha Zukang, Conference Secretary-General.

RIO+20 – Earth Summit 20

The UN General Assembly adopted a Resolution agreeing to hold the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012. Also referred to as "Rio+20" or Earth Summit 20, the conference takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 20-22 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg.

The objectives of the Conference are to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development; to assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development; and to address new and emerging challenges.

The Conference will focus on two specific themes: "A green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication" and "an institutional framework for sustainable development". Sustainable development emphasizes a holistic, equitable and far-sighted approach to decision-making at all levels. The concept of green economy focuses primarily on the intersection between environment and economy.

First Post Office in Bahamas

Recently I had visited beautiful country Bahamas. Commonwealth of the Bahamas is a small country consisting of more than 2000 islands, out of which only 27 have life. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, Orth west of the Turks and Calicos Islands, and southeast of the United States (nearest to the Florida).

It’s land area is only 13,939 km2 with a population of approx 35 lacs only. Nassau is the capital and Paradise Island is the biggest attraction. Tourist is the chief industry here.

Bahamas became a Crown Colony in 1718 and got independence in the year 1973.Bahamas has total 1234 Post Offices and apart from the Post Offices,Tourist kiosks also sell stamps.

Bahamian Dollar and Cent are the official currencies here but now-a-days US Dollar and US coins are more in use here. One Bahamian Dollar is equal to one US Dollar. Minimum postage for a letter or postcard for anywhere at Bahamas, USA,Canada & West Indies is $0.65 and for other countries $0.80. Use of British postage stamps began here in April 1858 and Bahamas issued its own stamps beginning 10 June 1859.

New cancellation on Mahatma Gandhi

 

Arrival of Gandhi Ji in Gorakhpur

A pictorial cancellation was given by Gorakhpur Postal Division today on 8th February to commemorate the arrival of Gandhiji at Gorakhpur on 8 Feb 1922.

After the incident of Chauri Chaura on 4 February1922 Mahatama Gandhi called  back his Asahayog Andolan and came to Gorakhpur on 8th February1922 ,but district administration did not allow him to go Chauri Chaura then a public meeting was held by Gandhi Ji  in Gorakhpur on 8th February 1922.

“Gandhi World Foundation” Conducted drawing Competition, quiz competition and other sports activities to over 150 nearby school students at Gummidipoondi , Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu on 29 January 2012 for remembrance of Mahatma’s 64th death anniversary. The main aim  of Gandhi world Foundation to organize this event was to spread Gandhiji’s thoughts to younger generation of our country.

 

Gandhi world Foundation founder ML. Rajesh, Managing Trustee R. Vijiaylakshmi, Trustee Dilip Kumar Jain, Pramod Jain started the events with their valuable speech about Gandhiji and organized other competition to entertain the excited kids, Trustee Lawyer Shyam Sundar, EX- Ranji Cricketer Murali, Dilip Kumar Jain eventually Lightened the ceremony with prize distribution.  A very respectful Homage was paid to Mahatma Gandhi.

Bihar Postal Circle organizes  STATE LEVEL PHILATELIC EXHIBITION - AT PATNA

STAMP EXPO-2012  : 10 –13 February, 2012

 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Stamp Expo-2012 is a 11^th STATE LEVEL PHILATELIC EXHIBITION of Bihar Postal Circle. It will be held at Patna from 10-13^th February, 2012.

1.2 The Exhibition is organized by the Bihar Postal Circle with the active support of philatelic associations/philatelists of Bihar/PCI. The organizing committee is headed by the Chief Postmaster General, Bihar Circle, Patna-800001.

2. VENUE

The venue of the Exhibition will be WHEELER SENATE HALL, PATNA UNIVERSITY, PATNA-800005.The venue is 3.5km away from Patna Railway Station.

3. SPECIAL COVER & CANCELLATION

Bihar Postal Circle will bring out single special cover every day as a feature of the Exhibition with a separate cancellation for each day. Special Cover with or without cancellation will be available on sell at the venue of the Exhibition. Order for special cover may be placed on the philately Bureau, Patna GPO/Muzaffarpur HO.

4. DEALER’S BOOTH:

6. RULES & REGULATIONS:

6.1 The Exhibition will be governed by India Post Regulations for philatelic exhibition (IP-PER), philatelic jurors programme (IP-PJP), philatelic award system (IP-PAS) and by special rules made there under.

6.2 Exhibits will be classified into the following two classes:

Non-competitive Class.

Competitive Class.

6.2.1 NON COMPETITIVE CLASS

6.2.1.1 CLASS OF HONOUR

The Exhibits that are of exceptional significance or interest. The minimum requirement is that the Exhibit should have won gold or the highest award in the relevant class at a higher level Exhibition within the last 5 years.

6.2.1.2 OFFICIAL CLASS

The Exhibit from National Philatelic Museum, Army Postal Service, India Security Printers, Stamp designers. Business houses dealing in franking machine, other Postal Equipment and other similar agencies.

6.2.1.3 JURY COLLECTIONS

The Exhibits from Jury and Apprentice Jury appointed for the Exhibition.The participation of jurors is optional.

6.2.1.4 SPECIAL INTEREST

The well known Exhibits from other Postal Divisions, Regions and Circles especially in those classes where there is no participant from the area to demonstrate and promote those Exhibition classes for future.

6.2.1.5 ABOVE COMPETITION

The Exhibits that have previously won Grand prize or the First and Second Runner up position in the championship class, at the same level. Exhibits under non competitive class 6.2.1.1,6.2.1.3,6.2.1.4 & 6.2.1.5 will be invited at the sole discretion of organizing committee.

6.3 COMPETITIVE CLASS

6.6 The exhibitor in Philatelic Publication Class, must submit two copies, one

returnable, of each title to the organizers by the closing date of receipt for

entries in this class. Periodicals shall comprise a complete volume of year.

A selection of 10 articles is required for entries in Article Section.

6.7 One-Frame Exhibit

7.1 Intending participants in the Exhibition should apply in the prescribed entry form in duplicate. The entry forms are available with:
