Weekly Royal Fashion Awards: Catching Up

Oh my. It's been...uh...some time since we talked regular royal fashion, what with all those royals going casual at the Olympics and then retreating for their summer holidays. We got the Paralympic outfits out of the way yesterday, let's have a massive round up from the rest of our leading ladies since whenever it was we last chatted, shall we? (Note: this is not every outfit.)

Most Family-Oriented Return
Princess Mathilde
Left to Right: A family photocall with the extended Belgian royal family; the first day of school.
Mathilde has returned to her royal engagement business, but first she had some family business to take care of: a massive family photocall, where pink seemed to be the name of the game, and taking the kids to school. Looking pretty mommy chic on the Mathilde scale, I'd say.

Strictest Return to Form
Princess Letizia
At the opening of a conference; visiting a business school
One simple sheath dress, one pantsuit. That's Letizia, in a nutshell.

Best Return to Princess Form
Crown Princess Mary
The inaguration of Campus Roskilde; the awarding of the Skt.Loye Prize; Visiting a kindergarten; at Circus Danneborg; A wreath-laying ceremony; Visiting two towns
Two hatted, gloved appearances: Mary's back in action, kids. Lovely mauve hat aside, though...my heart belongs to the orange Marc Jacobs. It's swishy! Jumpy claps. Mary gets bonus points for being a sporty royal too - and not a spectator sporty sort, à la the Olympics, but an actual sporty one: first, she swam in the channels of Copenhagen, wetsuit and all (she's patron of the Danish Swimming Federation), and then she played basketball. In heels and a hat, as you do. And it was adorable. Click here to see.

Best Use of Sporting Gear
Princess Máxima
At a conference; celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Maastricht School of Management; celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Pet'je af Foundation; swimming for ALS
Mary wasn't the only one wetsuit-ing up this week! Máxima was at it too, swimming in Amsterdam Canal for charity. But in Máxima's case, I think it might just be the highlight of her sartorial week, as the rest is meh. Colorful meh, but meh nevertheless.

Biggest Hodgepodge of a Week
Crown Princess Mette-Marit
At the confirmation of her son Marius; visiting Oslo Renovation for an introduction to municipal waste management; at the Fretex charity shop
Have you ever seen such a mix of royal outfits in one spot? Traditional in national dress, dressed up in saucy Prada heels...and a blazer over a Harvard t-shirt. I have no idea what one ought to wear to tour a municipal waste facility, but this strikes me as odd. Perhaps she should have investigated the wetsuit option.

Most Colorful Princess
Crown Princess Victoria
Opening Stockholm Fashion Week; the Polar Music Awards; awarding the Junior Water Prize; at the Export Hermes Awards; at an event for the Swedish Brain Foundation
Look at all that blissful color! It's enough to make you forgive a dodgy batch of shoe choices. (Clunky on multiple occasions and too much green at once. Dodgy.) Naturally, my favorite is the saucy yellow number - she always goes a little bit funky for this event - and the hair down. Down! Variety: it's the spice of life.

What's your favorite princess outfit for this week (or weeks, whatever)?

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 12-18 August

  1. Opening the Odense Flower Festival, 15 August. Bit of a sack, this...no? Best to focus on the kaleidoscope print.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 17-23 June

  1. Handing out the Crown Princess Mary Scholarship at the University of Copenhagen,19 June. Those are some serious shoulders. She looks like she could either take flight or take a tackle.
  2. a) Attending a garden party for Danish volunteers at Fredensborg Palace alongside other members of the royal family, 19 June, in b) Fendi. Not quite as garden party festive as Daisy with her floral ‘do, but it’ll do.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 10-16 June

1. Coastal hiking with the Danish Heart Foundation, 10 June. I love it when Mary goes casual. I just do.
2. Revealing a new stamp for charity for the Danish Heart Foundation, 10 June, in such a fun skirt. I love this look. I love this week. Hold on tight, I'm in the mood to gush over Mary, apparently.
3. At a birthday party for the former Court Chief, 11 June. She looks ready to par-tay.
4. Visiting Glostrup Hospital, 13 June.
5. Attending the presentation of the European Inventor Award, 14 June.
6. The welcome ceremony for the Chinese president’s state visit to Denmark, 14 June. Such a pretty color combination, and one of my favorite hats to boot.
7. Dinner for the European Trade Organizations, 14 June. Fantastic detail on this repeated gown.
8. Visiting Rosenborg Palace with the President and First Lady of China, 15 June.
9. Gala banquet, 15 June. Jumpy claps! My favorite dress from 2011 and TIARAS! Bless. I've been feeling so deprived of tiara appearances lately, I just feel we’ve been in a drought.
Nothing terribly surprising though, dress repeats all around and the usual turnout on the tiara front: Mary in her wedding tiara (her usual pick for an event like this), Marie in her usual floral tiara (ditto, and her only pick until we finally see her debut her second tiara), and Margrethe in the Turquoise Bandeau. The big news is that Marie finally has Margrethe's portrait brooch to wear! It's sort of like a royal family order (though not, technically), click here for more on those. Making it an even 8 grandkids must have done the trick.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 3-9 June

1. At the Free From Bullying relay race, 3 June.
2 - 8. Paying a short visit to Greenland in connection with the Mary Foundation, 4-7 June. A few more casual outfits than we usually see Mary in, but when you're hiking and running around with kids, whatcha gonna do?

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 27 May-2 June

  1. Opening a family house at the University Hospital in Aarhus, 30 May.
  2. Attending a 40th anniversary dinner for the WWF, 30 May. What a confusing event. Mary, Queen Margrethe, and Prince Henrik seemed to come dressed for an Asian theme (Mary's is rather Vietnamese, like a super groovy version of an áo dài, and yes, she is wearing it over trousers). But many of the other guests were just in the sort of standard evening gear you'd expect. Make of that what you will.
  3. Revealing a new portrait of herself, 31 May.
  4. At a friendly football match between Denmark and Australia, 2 June.
  5. a) Attending a birthday party for Fritz Schur, 2 June, b) in Prada.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 20-26 May

  1. a) The christening of Princess Athena, 20 May, b) wearing Project D.
  2. The christening of Princess Estelle, 22 May. An excellent set of christening appearances, if you ask me. I have come down firmly on the "like" side when it comes to outfit #1 there.
  3. Attending a concert of the Royal Life Guards Band, 24 May, wearing bits of the ruby parure again! I approve of this strategy.
  4. a) Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Danneborg royal yacht, 26 May, b) wearing Baum und Pferdgarten. Ahoy, matey! Nautical indeed.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 14-19 May

  1. Picking up where we left off, with day 4 in South Korea, 14 May. It's purrrty.
  2. a) Last day of the trip, 15 May, b) spent enjoying what I'm sure must be the best part of any such jaunt: the poppets!

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 7-14 May

1. Opening of the Cancer Society Solkampagne 2012, 8 May.
2. Arriving in South Korea for an official visit alongside her husband, 10 May.
3. Day 1, 10 May, straight out of the past, which means I should like it more than I do.
4. Official dinner, 10 May. Using stealth bits of the ruby parure - ring, bracelet, earrings, and leaves in the hair. Nicely done.
5. Day 2, 11 May. I think I prefer this in the entirely Saturday Night Fever mode (a.k.a. all white).

6. More on day 2, 11 May. Oooh. I very much like where this is going. Another interesting hairdo as well.
7. Day 3, 12 May.
8. More of day 3, 12 May. Ah yes. The eternal test of royal composure: pulling off the construction hat with aplomb.
9. Day 4, 13 May.
10. Visiting the DMZ on day 4, 13 May.
11. Day 5, 14 May. White and/or pastel seems to be the theme of the trip, eh?

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 30 April-6 May

  1. Launching a campaign and attending a conference, 2 May.
  2. At the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, 3 May.
  3. Attending a Fashion Summit evening event, 4 May.
  4. Unveiling a new portrait of herself for the Children's Aid Foundation, 6 May. Mmmm....meh. Not digging this week's matches, skirts to tops and belts and purses and whatnot. Except for this dress because, as you may know, purple is my kryptonite.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 22-29 April

  1. Opening an exhibition, 25 April.
  2. a-c) Attending the Reumert Award ceremony, 29 April. Still love it, despite you party poopers. Maybe I'll name it my best of the year for her. I know how much you lambs love an argument.

  1. On the balcony for Queen Margrethe's birthday, 16 April.
  2. At an awards ceremony, 18 April.
  3. At the opening of Research Day 2012, 19 April.
  4. Attending the funeral of Mærsk McKinney Møller, 21 April.
All kinds of cuteness on the balcony for Daisy's 72nd birthday.
Even Marie and her wee one! The little princess' name will finally be made public at her christening on May 20th.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 8-14 April

  1. Visiting the KFUM Soldier Mission, 10 April, in a Strenesse jacket. I think I like this slightly World War I retro military flair...though that could just be the Downton Abbey withdrawal talking.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 25 March-7 April

1. Making a visit to a swimming meet, 25 March.
2. Visiting the National Memorial during the visit of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, 26 March.
3. Official dinner for the British couple, 26 March.
4. On the last day of the visit, at the set of The Killing, 27 March. Shame about the boots there, but the ladies were told to avoid heels due to the terrain (she replaced them with regular shoes for the rest of the day).
5. a) Opening a mother and child center, 28 March, in b) H&M.
6. Attending the premiere of the movie A Royal Affair, 28 March. I can't look. The shoes, my eyes, they hurt.
7. a and b) Opening the e-Skills 2012 Conference, 30 March.

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 18-24 March

  1. Opening a conference on vulnerable children, 19 March.
  2. Welcoming the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to Denmark, 24 March.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 11-17 March

  1. Opening the Fugitives of the World exhibit, 13 March - see without the jacket here. Oh la! One of my faves, out to play again.
  2. At a conference in Copenhagen, 14 March- see the top better here. Dark stockings and light shoes - personal pet peeve territory, uh oh.
  3. Visiting Holbæk Hospital, 15 March. The trim on the jacket's got that homemade crochet vibe about it. I'm gonna have to give that a thumbs down unless she really did add it herself - in which case, go on with your bad crafting self - but it's Prada, so that's out.
  4. Attending a dinner, 15 March.
  5. Opening an exhibit and attending a conference, 16 March.

  2. Attending a meeting of the Danish Refugee Council, 5 March.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 26 February-3 March

  1. Day 1 of her mini-visit to Washington, D.C., at the International Development Bank, 27 February. She's been toting around this huge Prada bag, which I like - possibly because I feel like I could make one myself. Time to get crafty!
  2. At the World Conference of Women's Shelters where she was the keynote speaker, 27 February. Do note the animal print shoes, rawr.
  3. Day 2 at the conference for a workshop with The Mary Foundation, 28 February. The turtleneck shoves it into slightly Jetson-esque territory, methinks.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 12-18 February

Mary and family have been in skiing in Verbier for some time now, and I won't bother with all the outfits - ski jacket, ski pants, stocking hat, repeat, you get the picture. But she and Frederik did bring all the wee ones out for a photocall and some classic shenanigans last week.

Week in Review: Crown Princess Mary, 29 January-4 February

  1. Presenting the ECCO Walk In Style Award, 31 January. All of this week's outfits ranged from meh to eh for me when they first appeared, but now I find they've grown on me. Take this one, for example: at first it felt like a bit of a Try Hard, but now I get it. Sometimes a girl's gotta put on her Space Princess suit for a ride in her disco ball spaceship. Understandable.
  2. Attending a dinner for the diplomatic corps in celebration of Queen Margrethe's jubilee, 1 February. Naturally, this is the exception to the meh rule. Love at first sight. Come on, she has a tiara on (even if it is her small wedding tiara).
  3. At the One Europe, One Market conference, 2 February.
  4. Out and about for Copenhagen Fashion Week, 3 February.
Tiara roundup at the dinner:
Mary has shown us the pearl option of her wedding tiara for the second time, and I have to say it's much better this time around. Less of a crown, and that's a good thing with a piece this small. Margrethe freed the crown emeralds from their display for the evening, and Benedikte wore her floral tiara. That's a nice change, I feel like she usually opts for one of her spikier options.
