The FDC shows Pilgrims Way, Croagh Patrick. Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, remains something of an enigma. Records suggest that Irish raiders kidnapped the youthful Saint Patrick from somewhere in western England, around AD 400. Forced to herd sheep for his captors, he turned to God for solace during the worst of his hardships. Eventually he managed to escape and returned to England. He later returned to Ireland determined to spread the Christian gospel to his former captors. Legend has it that he used a three-leaved plant - the shamrock, to explain the Holy Trinity. The shamrock is now the national symbol of Ireland.
