Moricsala Reserve - The oldest nature reserve in Latvia
"The oldest nature reserve in Latvia – the Moricsala Reserve – is almost closed to visitors and can be visited only with a special permit issued by Slītere National Park administration. The reserve is located in Kurzeme, on the lake of Usma, and occupies a small part of the lake gulfs and two islands – Moricsala (the island gained its name from the son of the Sachsen Prince-elector August, later French Marshal Moriz, who was hiding on the island with a small military unit of Russian troops in 1727) and the Big Alder Isle (Lielā Alkšņu sala). The area of the reserve is 802 ha and has been recognised as a Natura 2000 territory. There is exceedingly rich flora and fauna on Moricsala: 409 species of vascular plants, 157 species of moss, 338 species of mushrooms, 82 species of lichens, more than 40 species of birds and 320 species of butterflies. More than 100 species are considered rare and endangered, not only in Latvia, but also in many other European countries. Moricsala is notable for the fact that, for the last couple 100 years, there have been no human economic activities, thus giving the island a unique and rarely seen wild woodland landscape. "
"100 years Moricsala Reserve (the island Moritz)," On the envelope the words: on a little sheet - 100 years of conservation, and under it - to observe, learn, take care! On the stamp: Reserve Moricsala - 100.

On 19 April 2012, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued a set of 12 stamps depicting endangered species. Theseare the twentieth set of stamps in UNPA's multi-year series Endangered Species. The series was launched on 3 March 1993 to highlight the need for the protection of endangered species throughout the world. For the twentieth anniversary of the Endangered Species stamp issue, UNPA has included three universally recognized and loved animals from previous years-the Giant Panda, the Siberian Tiger and the Snow Leopard.
UNPA has issued three sheets of 16 stamps, one sheet in each of the three currencies. Four different endangered species are illustrated on each sheet; hence, 12 species have been covered.

Sacred Animals of Hinduism
Guinea Bissau Post issued a beautiful Souvenir Sheet and a set of four stamps in the year 2010 featuring Sacred Animals of Hinduism. Issues from Guinea Bissau and some other African countries are always very controversial among serious stamp collectors whether to include them in collection or not. As these stamps are issued on themes which are not related with the subjects of their own country. So many of the issues are regarded as illegitimate issues and are not preferred by advance collectors to display them in their exhibits. But these are legitimate issues of Guinea Bissau and appear in the catalogue. It is a beautiful issue which any Indian would love to have in his/her collection !!
About Guinea Bissau…
The Republic of Guinea-Bissau is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south and east, with the Atlantic Ocean to its west.
It covers 36,125 km² (nearly 14,000 sq mi) with an estimated population of 1,600,000.
Guinea-Bissau was once part of the kingdom of Gabu, as well as part of the Mali Empire. Parts of this kingdom persisted until the 18th century, while a few others were part of the Portuguese Empire since the 16th century. It then became the Portuguese colony of Portuguese Guinea in the 19th century. Upon independence, declared in 1973 and recognised in 1974, the name of its capital, Bissau, was added to the country's name to prevent confusion with the bordering Republic of Guinea.
Only 14% of the population speaks the official language, Portuguese. A plurality of the population (44%) speaks Kriol, a Portuguese-based creole language, and the remainder speak native African languages. The main religions are African traditional religions and Islam, and there is a Christian (mostly Catholic) minority.
