Royal Outfit of the Day: January 17

Last summer, Princess Marie-Chantal (left) wore an Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013 embellished dress (runway, center) for Princess Madeleine's pre-wedding dinner. At this year's Golden Globe Awards, Michelle Dockery of "Downton Abbey" fame (right) sported the same look.
You know, I very nearly included M-C's look in my honorable mentions for 2013, and when I saw it pop up this past weekend at the Globes, my appreciation for the royal styling grew even more. In the epic battle of "Who wore it best?", I have to give this one to M-C because the shoes and her overall bearing are making the look. This is one dress that benefits from the eh, I wear couture to grab the morning paper attitude, if you get what I'm saying. Et toi?

(Celebrity fashion isn't within our normal scope here, but I can't let a reference to the awards pass without saying LUPITA! and CAPES! That is all. If you missed the Globes gown parade, Buzzfeed's got the quickest fashion wrap up.)

Wedding Wednesday: September Brides

September weddings include some of those couples we see pop up at big European royal events, plus some prep for the next wedding on the horizon:

Spetember 8 & 24, 1994
And this month we'll add another Luxembourg royal wedding to the roster (Félix and Claire!).

Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah of Brunei and Sarah Salleh
September 9, 2004
Days of glittering ceremonies were required to wed the Crown Prince to his bride, who was just 17 years old.

Lord Frederick Windsor and Sophie Winkleman
September 12, 2009
New parents to baby Maud, these two.

Prince Aimone of Savoy and Princess Olga of Greece
September 16 & 27, 2008
If you're looking for a unique royal wedding gown, allow me to present this Prada creation.

September 18, 1964
A personal fave! So simple, so pretty.

Crown Prince Alexander II of Serbia and Katherine Batis
September 20 & 21, 1985
A second marriage for both.

Crown Princess Margarita of Romania and Radu Duda
September 21, 1996
She borrowed the Cartier Essex Tiara for her wedding day, a good switch from her standard Greek Key Tiara, I think.

Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna of Russia and Prince Franz Wilhelm of Prussia
September 22, 1976
It's your favorite kokoshnik-wearing grande dame, prone to appearing at extended royal events, and her former husband.

Princess Astrid of Belgium and Archduke Lorenz of Austria-Este
September 22, 1984
Attack of the Giant Sleeves.

Prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy and Clotilde Courau
September 25, 2003

Wedding Wednesday: August Brides

August is a little lighter month for royal weddings, and we have a light little selection of late summer gowns for you:

August 25, 2001
Part of your list of favorite gowns, and rightly so.

Prince Pieter-Christiaan of Orange-Nassau and Anita van Eijk
August 25 & 27, 2005
Another of the four sons of Princess Margriet of the Netherlands and Pieter van Vollenhoven.

August 25, 2010
A Greek royal wedding held in Greece, which has become a rarity (Nikolaos' older siblings were both married in London, where the family has lived in exile).

August 25 & 27, 2011
If you're going to have an August royal wedding, you want to have at least part of it on August 25th, I guess?

Prince El Hassan bin Talal and Sarvath Ikramullah
August 28, 1968
The lovely Sarvath and Hassan, often seen among the guests at big royal occasions (due to the fact that Hassan served as the Crown Prince of Jordan for his brother, King Hussein, for many years).

August 29, 1968
If you can't have it on August 25th, then have it in Norway, apparently. (Understandable coincidences, both, but still - I'm easily entertained.)

Who is your favorite August bride? Among these or the many other options out there?

Wedding Wednesday: July Brides

July's another busy bridal month, and we have some extra famous ones in the mix:

July 1, 1995
Another Valentino gown, coming off last month's recent creation.

Princess Stephanie of Monaco and Daniel Ducruet
July 1, 1995
Both a wedding gown and a cocktail gown, very practical...

July 1 & 2, 2011
Still the best she's ever looked, in my humble opinion.

July 2, 1959
Timely and coincidental, this second peek at the wedding of the soon-to-be abdicated King and his bride.

Prince Alois of Liechtenstein and Duchess Sophie in Bavaria
July 3, 1993
This is also, I'd say, the best this bride has ever looked.

The Duke of York and Princess Victoria Mary of Teck
July 6, 1893
An "antique" option for you - King George V and Queen Mary - though this wedding will always stand out more for the jewels the bride received than for anything she wore, in my brain.

July 6 & 8, 2000
This is not the best this particular bride has looked, I'm sorry to say.

July 8, 1972
A throwback to the quiet times when Richard, the second son, was meant to be an architect and not a duke.

July 9, 1999
Another option from Greece, this time far simpler than M-C and her Valentino.

July 12, 2012
These two have welcomed a son since their wedding last year.

July 14, 1994
Always a fan favorite, this gown earned a spot on your list of favorite royal wedding gowns.

July 18, 1996
This one's usually a favorite too - those Windsor cousins didn't do so bad.

Lady Rose Windsor and George Gilman
July 19, 2008
Rose is one of the daughters of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and her lovely wedding gown was accented by the family's diamond Iveagh Tiara.

July 22, 2011
The lovely Zeina borrowed a diamond floral tiara from her mother-in-law, Princess Sarvath.

July 23, 1986
One of the seriously famous wedding gowns on the list...

July 29, 1981
...and another! Both former Windsor brides made my personal list of best royal wedding gowns (not favorite, best. There's a difference).

Prince Hans-Adam of Liechtenstein and Countess Marie Aglaë Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau
July 30, 1967
Marie is wearing the major Habsburg fringe tiara with her wonderfully simple gown.

July 30, 2011
The parents to be! This list is going well with our recent run of royal news.

Lady Davina Windsor and Gary Lewis
July 31, 2004
And we wrap up with Davina, who is the other daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and her beau Gary, from New Zealand.

Who's your favorite July bride?

Readers' Ultimate Tiaras: Pick Your Pearls!

Pearls are a staple in a royal jewel vault, don't you agree? Most of the major royal collections have at least one pearl tiara at their disposal, and many have multiple options. Obviously, special space in your ultimate tiara collection should be devoted to pearls - two spaces, to be exact.

Pick your ultimate pearl drop tiara!

AND

Pick your ultimate standard pearl tiara!

Yes, we have two spots to pick this time around, so let's get to it. I'm splitting this into two distinct categories: pearl drops and just, you know, regular pearl tiaras. (By the way, there are oodles of links here - they will take you either to an entry on this blog with more info, or to a photo of the tiara in use.)

Choice #1: Dangling Pearl Drop

Pearl drop tiaras are defined here as those with dangling pearl drops. It's quite a popular tiara design, these pearl pendants swinging from diamond frameworks, with plenty of examples to pick from.

The British collection offers two prominent examples.

The Cambridge Lover's Knot was originally made as a replica of another tiara. It shouldn't be a surprise, then, to learn that there are multiple lover's knot tiaras out there with close to identical designs.
1. The Yusupova Lover's Knot Tiara, worn by Princess Tatiana Alexandrovna Yusupova
2. The Bavarian Lover's Knot Tiara, worn by Antonia, Crown Princess of Bavaria
3. The Saxony Lover's Knot Tiara, worn by Princess Maria Immaculata of Saxony
4.The Patiala Lovers Knot Tiara, worn by Rajmata Mohinder Kaur of Patiala
5. The Toro Lover's Knot Tiara, worn by Queen Best, mother of the King of Toro

Plus, drop pearl tiaras come in all kinds of other forms:
1. The Pearl Poiré Tiara, from Denmark
3. Alexandra Feodorovna's Pearl Drop Tiara, sold to the Duchess of Marlborough and then to Imelda Marcos, who apparently had it dismantled
5. The Romanov Pearl Drop Tiara, also worn by Alexandra Feodorovna
6. A modern Cartier version with central feather
7. Princess Anastasia of Greece's Cartier Tiara, with drop pearls and diamonds
9. An option apparently from Prussian royalty
And there are more out there, of course.

Choice #2: Standard Pearl

Second, I'll ask you to choose a regular pearl tiara - one that doesn't include dangling drops, but does include pretty much whatever else you like.

Upright drop pearls are always popular.
1. The Ancona Tiara, from Italy
4. The Antique Pearl Tiara, from the Netherlands
5. A pearl-topped fringe from the Romanov collection
7. The Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara, from the Netherlands
8. Queen Maud's Pearl and Diamond Tiara, from Norway, also available in a smaller pearl form

Round pearls work as toppers, too.
1. The Cartier Loop Tiara, from Spain
2. The Kent Festoon Tiara, from Britain
6. The Lotus Flower Tiara, from Britain
7. King Olav's Gift Tiara, from Norway

Or you can just incorporate them any which way you please.
2. The Rosebery Tiara, formerly in the collection of the Westminsters but recently sold
4. The Mountbatten Star Tiara, from the Mountbatten family
5. The Pearl Button Tiara, from the Netherlands
8. The Ogilvy Tiara, from Britain

And seriously, that's just the tip of the iceberg.
I mean, this doesn't even include things that go beyond your standard diamond and pearl pairing, like the Cameo Tiara, or the Portland Sapphire Tiara, all of which are fair game if you like! But I'll leave you here.

For reference, here's how your Ultimate Tiara Collection is looking so far:

Ready to vote for your favorite?
-Vote for two tiaras in the comments, one for each category. (If you're mentioning multiple tiaras in your comment, indicate which two get your vote, or I will just count the first applicable two. One comment vote per person, please.)
-I will also count the number of "likes" or up arrows on those comments, so you can vote that way too.
-Non-royal tiaras and tiaras that no longer exist are fair game too.

Programming note: The blog is on vacation next week. (I'll still be posting at the Jewel Vault, where it will be a busy week for the Queen.) I will put up an open post on Monday for those of you that would like to chat while we're on hiatus so we can keep that separate from the voting, make it a little easier for me in the tallying stage. I'll leave this post open until Wednesday for voting.

UPDATE: Thanks for all your contributions, voting is now closed!

Royal Fashion Awards: Princess Madeleine's Wedding

Last but not least in our coverage of Princess Madeleine and Chris O'Neill's wedding comes the guests, gowns and tiaras and all. Specific info on tiaras and orders/sashes will be below each category, since those are always popular questions. And before we get started, if you missed the wedding (or just want to watch again), it is streaming at SVT for a limited time. Okay, here we go:

Best in Trains
A Tie
Left to Right: Princess Marie of Denmark, Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway
These ladies set the stage for a pastel guest line up, but they get special recognition for bringing it in the form of lovely trains, despite this being a lower key affair. Marie didn't catch my eye in the broadcast, but on further review this is really quite lovely; Märtha Louise is surprisingly understated and also purple; and Mette-Marit has done the layered pastel thing a zillion times, but she gets me every time and resistance is futile. I like them all!

Tiara roundup (click here for a better look, and on the tiara names for a specific post if one exists): Marie - Marie's Diamond Floral Tiara, Märtha Louise - smaller version of Queen Maud's Pearl and Diamond Tiara, Mette-Marit - Amethyst Necklace Tiara.
Sashes: Marie - Order of the Elephant (Denmark), Märtha Louise and Mette-Marit - Order of the Polar Star (Sweden).

Best in Haga Princesses
Princess Margaretha
L to R: Princesses Christina, Margaretha, Birgitta, and Désirée of Sweden
A mixed bag from the bride's aunts, an extension of our post on the royal family. I pick...Margaretha, I guess, because she let us see the Baden Fringe Tiara, and she wore purple. Last pass just because of purple, honest.

Tiara roundup: Christina - Six Button Tiara, Margaretha - Baden Fringe Tiara, Birgitta - Connaught Tiara, Désirée - Cut Steel Tiara.
Sashes: Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) for all.

Best in Tiara Intrigue
Princess Anna
L to R: the Countess of Wessex, Princess Theodora of Greece, Princess Anna of Bavaria, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg
We had a rousing round of tiara guessing in advance of this wedding, and there were several ladies with interesting choices to make. Sophie did indeed opt for her Five Aquamarine Tiara, though she paired it with a pretty blah dress I'd say. Theodora borrowed her sister Princess Alexia's diamond tiara, though once again I think we need to talk about dress fit. Stéphanie picked another new-to-her tiara from the Luxembourg vault, the Citrine (or Topaz) and Pearl Tiara, and could have made an interesting pair with her shimmery dress, but the execution is...lacking. So I'm giving it to Princess Anna; the ladies from Bavaria were a question mark because the tiara they usually wear was recently sold, but both Anna and her mother-in-law Princess Ursula wore tiaras anyway, unknown (to me) diamond numbers. (And that really is the last purple pass. I really promise this time.)

Oh! And one bonus piece of tiara intrigue: Princess Silvia d'Arenberg showed up wearing...Princess Sibilla's Art Deco Tiara! Apparently the families are close. I'll take any opportunity to see that gorgeous Luxembourg jewel.

Tiara roundup: Yeah, we just did that.
Sashes: Sophie - Royal Victorian Order (Britain), Theodora - Order of Saints Olga and Sophia (Greece), Stéphanie - Civil and Military Order of Merit of Adolph of Nassau (Luxembourg).

Best in Tiara Clashes
Princess Kelly
L to R: Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Princess Kelly of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Princess Charlene of Monaco
Continuing on in interesting tiara choices...these pairings I found a little questionable. I don't like the Midnight Tiara as much as some of you do, and I was surprised to see Mary wear it here - but even more surprised to see her pair its soft, cool gray tones with this dress (what are we calling that color...neon coral?) and the strong colors of her sash. I like the shape of her gown but could pass on the rest, I'm afraid. I thought the same of Kelly but to a lesser degree, as I love the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha Turquoise Tiara and really only object to her sash here. She wins. And then there's Charlene, who paired her tree bark gown with the elusive Invisible Tiara, possibly heisted from my own personal collection. Pfft.

Tiara roundup: See above, again.
Sashes: Mary - Order of the Polar Star (Sweden), Kelly - Ducal Saxe-Coburg and Gotha House Order, Charlene - zilch, though she could have worn the Order of Saint-Charles.

Best of the Rest
Princess Marie-Chantal
L to R: Princess Tatiana of Greece, Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, Princess Benedikte of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, Princess Takamado of Japan
Mixed bag time, to round up the ladies! I actually like all of these outfits - they all seem well-suited to their own ages/personal styles. I like good old M-C and her casual couture routine the best, despite the fact that she did walk a little close to the bridal white line.

Tiara roundup: Tatiana - Antique Corsage Tiara, Marie-Chantal - her fringe tiara, Benedikte - Queen Ingrid's Star and Spike Tiara, Hisako - her own tiara.
Sashes: Tatiana and Marie-Chantal - Order of Saints Olga and Sophia (Greece), Benedikte - Order of the Polar Star (Sweden), Hisako - Order of the Precious Crown (Japan).

Best in Gents
Crown Prince Pavlos
L to R (click to enlarge): Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Prince Joachim of Denmark, Crown Prince Pavlos and Prince Nikolaos and Prince Philippos of Greece, Ari Behn, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg, the Earl of Wessex
Non-comprehensive (like the rest of this entry), obviously, but a sampling of the gentlemen will close us out. My favorite is Pavlos. Uniformed? No. Dapper, suave, etc.? Oh, yes. We'll make it a matched pair, one prize for him and one for his lovely wife M-C.

Tiara roundup: That'd be something to see, wouldn't it?
Sashes: Frederik and Haakon - Order of the Seraphim (Sweden), Joachim - Order of the Polar Star (Sweden), Pavlos and Nikolaos and Philippos - Order of the Redeemer (Greece), Ari - Order of the Crown (Netherlands), Guillaume - Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau (Luxembourg), Edward - Order of the Garter (Britain).
