Recently I had visited beautiful country Bahamas. Commonwealth of the Bahamas is a small country consisting of more than 2000 islands, out of which only 27 have life. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, Orth west of the Turks and Calicos Islands, and southeast of the United States (nearest to the Florida).

Bahamian Dollar and Cent are the official currencies here but now-a-days US Dollar and US coins are more in use here. One Bahamian Dollar is equal to one US Dollar. Minimum postage for a letter or postcard for anywhere at Bahamas, USA,Canada & West Indies is $0.65 and for other countries $0.80. Use of British postage stamps began here in April 1858 and Bahamas issued its own stamps beginning 10 June 1859.

Underwater Post Office at Bahamas

Underwater Post office….

- Sudhir Jain from Bahamas

Bahamas_Stamp

Bahamas is the first country to have an underwater post office from the year 1939 to 1940. This seafloor post office was actually a submarine sphere used for filming underwater scenes. Basically meant for tourists, this seafloor post office allowed tourists to get a breathtaking view of marine sea life and send a souvenir postcard home with a special post mark “Sea Floor / Bahamas” printed on it.

photo

Captain J.E Williamson started this underwater post office.  He was pioneer in undersea photography and also deeply involved in the production of a number of motion pictures under the Sea. His father invented a tube that could stretch to depths of 200 feet below the surface. Williamson himself added a round chamber with a thick glass window and used this chamber to take photographs of undersea creatures. In the year 1939, this photosphere
was transformed into an underwater post office by the name of "Sea Floor Bahamas." shortly in the year1940 it was closed.

In the year 1965, the Bahamas Postal department issued a definitive set. Williamson’s photosphere and the 1939 Sea Floor post office were depicted on the five-shilling denomination stamp of this set. The same pictures were used again in year 1966 and 1967 on new definitive stamps also.

Space Post Office

In this era of Facebook, email, Twitter and other social media, getting a postcard from someone's travels has a certain appeal.China's mail service looks to be taking that tourist postcard to a whole new level.

To celebrate  docking of the
Shenzhou-8 unmanned spacecraft with space lab module Tiangong-1, China's post authority has opened a new branch office outside the country and out of this world -- 343 kilometers above the Earth, to be exact.

Opening for business on the same day, the China Post Space Office has two venues -- one on-the-ground base inside the Beijing Aerospace Command and Control Center (BACCC) and one "virtual office" aboard the Shenzhou-8 spacecraft. There is also a new designated post code -- 901001.

China Post Group’s general manager Li Guohua told China Daily the post office will be able to deliver mail from the public to astronauts in future. The office will also issue postal souvenirs, such as stamps and envelopes that depict China's major space program events.

This is Speed Post Service or Slow Post Service of India Post ?????

This is just to draw the attention of all regarding Poor Speed Post service of India Post . I sent my exhibits for SINE, a national stamp exhibition   to Mr Madhukar Jhingan, Paschim Vihar, New Delhi from Bhuntar Sub Post Office Kullu on 31st October 2011. As per Speed Post  tracking record the article reached New Delhi on 2nd November. But it was not delivered to the addressee on 2nd November. In fact there was no transaction on 3rd and 4th November. On 5th November the article was bagged for Paschim Vihar PO and still it is doubtful whether it was delivered to the addressee today.

Is it a reliable service of which  India Post boasts of ????? Due to negligence of the Postal Department my exhibits could not reach the destination and it could not be displayed as the exhibition started from from 3rd  November 2011.

Who is responsible for this delay ….. ??? The concerned post office must give a clear explanation for this delay . Why was the article not delivered on the date it reached New Delhi. It was not sent either on 3rd or 4th November.   It caused  lot of inconvenience and  my exhibits  could not be displayed in the exhibition.

Being a philatelist I am highly disappointed that due to negligence and poor working of India Post my exhibits were deprived from participation in the exhibition….  What about if it was someone’s admit card for examination or interview letter for a job ??????  How India Post justifies its working ???
