Bicycling - Pedaling Forward

image

Hi Here is a nice set of four stamps issued by US postal service on 7th June which features Bicycling a very popular activity in almost all the countries. Most of us had tried cycling in our childhood…and it was a great feeling to do…The stamps are just beautiful featuring four different types of bicycles…What attracted me most is its beautiful digital cancellation that depicts a bicycle too !! This i is all for tonight..…Till Next Post…Happy Collecting !!

Bicycling: Pedaling Forward

From the training wheels used by a young child learning to ride, to the airborne wheels underneath a daring BMX racer, bicycling is an activity enjoyed by millions of Americans. And with four new colorful, se-tenant designs, the Postal Service celebrates the popular hobby as a source of recreation, transportation, exercise, competition, and in all, fun.

Bicycling has a long history of appearing on stamps — the first dating back more than 100 years to the 1902 Messenger on Bicycle Special Delivery stamp. Since then, bicycling has been featured on a variety of issuances, including those recognizing the Olympic Games, the history of American transportation, extreme sports, and recently, environmentally friendly tips.

Date of Issue : 7 June 2012

With the issuance of these stamps, the U.S. Postal Service celebrates bicycling, one of the most popular outdoor activities in America. Each of the four colorful se-tenant stamps features a different kind of bike and rider: a young child just learning to ride with training wheels, a commuter pedaling to work, a road racer intent on the finish line, and an airborne BMX rider.

Recent surveys indicate that Americans enjoy billions of bike rides a year. Bicycling organizations around the US report increased participation in local biking activities, and nearly half of all Americans say they would like more bicycling resources, such as trails and bike lanes, in their communities.

Bicycling is a low-impact aerobic activity that just about everyone — from young children to retirees — can enjoy. The health benefits are impressive: Riding a bike lowers the risk of obesity, heart disease, and breast cancer while improving muscle tone and strength. Bicycling can also lower stress. Whether riding along a lakeside path or through the bike lanes of a bustling city, bicycling is therapeutic and just plain fun.

The Bicycling stamps have been issued as Forever® stamps. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate.

Stamps on Autism Awareness by UNPA…

image

Date of Issue : 30 March 2012

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day to highlight the need to help improve the lives of children and adults who are affected by the disorder so they can lead full and meaningful lives. UNPA issued a set of 6 stamps on March 30 to raise the awareness of Autism globally.

image

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviours. ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention, and physical health issues. Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between two and three years of age. Studies also show that autism is three to four times more common among boys than girls.

 image

Each individual with autism is unique. Many of those on the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music, math, art and academic skills. About 40 per cent have average to above average intellectual abilities. Indeed, many persons on the spectrum take deserved pride in their distinctive abilities and "atypical" ways of viewing the world. Others with autism have significant disabilities and are unable to live independently. About 25 per cent of individuals with ASD are nonverbal but can learn to communicate using other means.

The overall mission of autism organizations is to support people affected by autism and their families to improve the lives of those on the autism spectrum. For some, this means the development and delivery of more effective treatments that can address significant challenges in communication and physical health. For others, it means increasing acceptance, respect and support.

India Year Pack 2009

Received  Year Pack 2009 through my PDA account. I was shocked to see the price printed on the pack.
There were total 107 stamps issued in 2009, with three stamps in denomination of Rs. 20.
so the total comes to
104 x Rs. 5 = Rs. 520
3 x Rs. 20 = Rs. 60
Total = Rs. 580.

pack 2009 reverse

but the price printed on the pack was Rs. 800...!!! also the quantity of stamps issued were mentioned wrong as 104 instead of 107.Normally in previous year packs, the handling cost charged was around only Rs. 60

La Poste commemorates discovery of Insulin…

image

Date of Issue : 18 November 2011

French Post issued a stamp yesterday  to commemorate the Discovery of Insulin in the year 1921. Here is the detailed story behind Insulin that cures millions of diabetic patients…

Story behind INSULIN

In 1869 Paul Langerhans, a medical student in Berlin, was studying the structure of the pancreas under a microscope when he identified some previously unnoticed tissue clumps scattered throughout the bulk of the pancreas. The function of the “little heaps of cells”, later known as the islets of Langerhans, was unknown, but Edouard Laguesse later suggested they might produce secretions that play a regulatory role in digestion. Paul Langerhans’ son, Archibald, also helped to understand this regulatory role. The term “insulin” origins from insula, the Latin word for islet/island.

In 1889, the Polish-German physician Oscar Minkowski, in collaboration with Joseph von Mering, removed the pancreas from a healthy dog to test its assumed role in digestion. Several days after the dog’s pancreas was removed, Minkowski’s animal keeper noticed a swarm of flies feeding on the dog’s urine. On testing the urine, they found there was sugar in the dog’s urine, establishing for the first time a relationship between the pancreas and diabetes. In 1901, another major step was taken by Eugene Opie, when he clearly established the link between the islets of Langerhans and diabetes: “Diabetes mellitus… is caused by destruction of the islets of Langerhans and occurs only when these bodies are in part or wholly destroyed.” Before his work, the link between the pancreas and diabetes was clear, but not the specific role of the islets.

Over the next two decades, several attempts were made to isolate whatever it was the islets produced as a potential treatment. In 1906, George Ludwig Zuelzer was partially successful treating dogs with pancreatic extract, but was unable to continue his work. Between 1911 and 1912, E.L. Scott at the University of Chicago used aqueous pancreatic extracts, and noted “a slight diminution of glycosuria”, but was unable to convince his director of his work’s value; it was shut down. Israel Kleiner demonstrated similar effects at Rockefeller University in 1915, but his work was interrupted by World War I, and he did not return to it.

Nicolae Paulescu, a Romanian professor of physiology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, was the first to isolate insulin, in 1916, which he called at that time, pancrein, by developing an aqueous pancreatic extract which, when injected into a diabetic dog, proved to have a normalizing effect on blood sugar levels. He had to interrupt his experiments because the World War I and in 1921 he wrote four papers about his work carried out in Bucharest and his tests on a diabetic dog. Later that year, he detailed his work by publishing an extensive whitepaper on the effect of the pancreatic extract injected into a diabetic animal, which he called: “Research on the Role of the Pancreas in Food Assimilation”.

Only 8 months later, the discoveries he published were copied (or, as some say, confirmed) by doctor Frederick Grant Banting and biochemist John James Rickard Macleod, who were later awarded the Nobel prize for the discovery of insulin in 1923, which Paulescu discovered as early as 1916. By the time Banting also isolated insulin, Paulescu already held a patent for his discovery and he was the first to secure the patent rights for his method of manufacturing pancreine/insulin (April 10, 1922, patent no. 6254 (8322) “Pancreina şi procedeul fabricaţiei ei”/”Pancrein and the process of making it”, from the Romanian Ministry of Industry and Trade). Moreover, Banting was very familiar with Paulescu’s work, he even used Paulescu’s “Research on the Role of the Pancreas in Food Assimilation” as reference in the paper that brought him the Nobel.

Children's day,   known as "Bal Diwas", in India falls on November 14th every year and for good reason. When India gained its independence, he became the first Prime Minister of free India.

commemorative stamps on Jawaharlal Nehru from USSR (1989) and Turkey

Chacha Nehru as the children fondly referred to him, was fond of both children and roses. In fact he often compared the two, saying that children were like the buds in a garden. They should be carefully and lovingly nurtured, as they were the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow. He felt that children are the real strength of a country and the very foundation of society. He was the ‘beloved’ of all the children who gave him the endearing name of ‘Chacha Nehru’.As a tribute to this great man and his love for the children, his birthday is celebrated all over India as ‘CHILDREN’S DAY’.
