New stamps on Scouts and Guides..

To mark Centenary of Costa Rica’s Guides and Scouts, on 28 Oct 2011, Costa Rica Post has issued souvenir sheet of two stamps with face value 340 colones of each. The stamps feature a campground and bonfire.

Scouting was founded in Costa Rica in 1915 and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1925. Guiding started in 1922 and became a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1981. The association has more than 10,000 youth members of both genders and about 2,000 adult volunteers .

An interesting aspect of Scouting in Costa Rica is a University course on Scouting. This course is mandatory for all future teachers. The course highlights the educational value of Scouting.

Scouting in Costa Rica has an emphasis on community service, rural Scouting and nature conservation projects. The Association has a National Office and 8 regional offices throughout 9 regions of Costa Rica Each regional office has a regional executive that links the region to the National Office.

New Stamps on Christmas..

Iceland

As  Christmas is arriving many countries are issuing special stamps for this festive occasion. Here are new Christmas stamps from Hungary and Iceland.

The motifs of these Iceland Post's Christmas stamps are based on goldwork embroidery, a rich national heritage involving techniques used for Icelandic national costumes.

Goldwork is the art of embroidery using silver and gold threads. Reference is also made to skattering, an old Icelandic method of embroidering, often used for colourful flower patterns.

Hungary

Magyar Posta is issuing a set of postage stamps to celebrate Christmas. In 2011 the festive stamps show two Catholic churches with Nativity scenes that are unique both in Hungarian and world terms.

The Nagykaracsony church is on the left of the HUF 90 stamp, and next to it is a detail of the largest outdoor Nativity scene in Hungary, which is to be found in Nagykaracsony. The Roman Catholic church in Vors is on the left of the HUF 115 stamp, with a detail of the largest indoor Nativity scene in Europe, which is rebuilt every year, next to it.

Gold-colour foil has been used for the inscription Karacsony (Christmas) and other decorative motifs on the stamps.

News from Philatelic Societies

PHILATELIC CLUB THRISSUR

Philatelic Club Thrissur was started in April 1976 as Stamp Exchange Club of Trichur. The first President of the Club was Mr. K. K.Govindankutty and Secretary Mr. Olvex M Noronha. In 1978 Annual General Body was conducted with 16 members. In this meeting Club’s name changed as Trichur Philatelic Association with Mr. Pallan J Kunjuvareed as president, Mr. Olvex M Noronha as secretary and adopted new Bye-law. Philately and Numismatic classes were regularly conducted in the monthly meetings. Journal of the Club” The Philatelist” won Bronze Medal in 1987 International Exhibition.

In 1991, Trichur Philatelic Association was changed to Philatelic Club Thrissur registered (534/91) under Societies Act, along with new emblem. Philatelic Club Thrissur affiliated to Philatelic Congress of India. For the first time in the history of Kerala Postal Circle, Philatelic Advisory Board was constituted with the leadership of Chief Post Master General V. Radhakrishnan. Two members of the board were from Philatelic Club Thrissur viz.: Mrs. Sathi Veerachandra Menon and Mr. O K Prakash.

The first coin and stamp exhibition of Philatelic Club Thrissur “THRISSURPEX 91” was conducted on 20, 21, 22 September 1991: this was inaugurated by District Council President Mr. V. V Raman. Municipal Chairman Mr. Kesavan Kutty Menon and Post Master General Mr. Thomas Varghese were presided. The portrait of Sakthan Thampuran, the father of Thrissur depicted in the special cover. The special cancelation was elephant and Thidampu. Prizes were distributed on the closing day by Chief Post Master General Mr. V. Radhakrishnan in the presence of Mr.Therambil Ramakrishnan M L A. It was a great achievement of all the members of the club working together in one spirit. During the exhibition more than 105 members joined the Club including Mr. Deschl from USA who wrote “The Comprehensive India States Postal Stationary Listing”.

Philatelic Club conducted coin exhibition “THRISSURNEX 94 “on 6, 7, 8, 9 October 1994. Due to non availability of frames from the postal department, Club was forced to abandon philately at the last moment.

The silver jubilee celebration of Philatelic Club Thrissur “THRISSURPEX2003” was conducted on 19, 20, 21 September 2003. The 33^rd annual celebration “THRISSURPEX 2008” Philatelic and Numismatic exhibition was conducted on 18, 19, 20 November 2008 .

Philatelic Club Thrissur won laurels at World Philatelic Exhibition “INDIPEX2011” held in February 2011 at New Delhi. Its four members bagged five medals in the International exhibition. While Mr. E P James and Dr K S Mohan won ‘Vermeil’ Medals for their collection on Cochin State Anchal (Postal) History, Mrs. Sathy Veerachandra Menon (Travancore Post Mark) Mr. O K Prakash (Cochin State Postal History) and Mr. E P James (Cochin Stamps) won ‘Large Silver Medals’.

Korean Tourist destinations on stamps..

Fascinating Tourist Destinations hidden in every corner of Korea will be introduced as a new series of stamps over the next four years. Korea Post issued its firs series on 27 May 2011.

The first installment of this series features the landscapes of Juknokwon in Damyang, a green tea field in Boseong, a wetland in Upo and Jusanji in Cheongsong. Juknokwon (a Bamboo Grove) in Damyang The wind blowing through the bamboo forest. Rustling sounds of bamboo leaves. Just looking up at the towering bamboos makes us feel invigorated.

This wondrous place enables the visitor to smell the delicate scent of freshly roasted green tea leaves, as well as experiencing such diverse events as the Dahyangje and green tea-related cultures.

Upo Wetland in Changnyeong Wetlands are called “the kidneys of nature” for its function of naturally purifying water. Recently, the benefits that wetlands bring to humans and its ecological values have placed the importance of their preservation under new spotlight.

It is said that over the past 300 years since, the reservoir has never revealed its bottom. Nested quietly on the foot of the Juwang Mountain, it offers its visitors the joy of meditation

Here are some new stamps to be issued by Bulgaria and Estonia Post to celebrate International Year of Forests with common theme of Europa 2011 – the year of Forests. The stamps are beautiful and look magnificent !! Bulgaria Post also issues a Miniature sheet with to stamps and two separate sheetlets of each stamp. More new issues of EUROPA 2011 could be seen on this Special Blog . A query from the reader…..given in next section of this Post. Response from the readers will be highly appreciated !! Krishnadevaraya MS…..No of copies ???

I have received enquiries from some of our readers regarding the actual number of MS of Krishnadevaraya issued by India Post on 27 January 2011. The information sheet mentions number of copies of stamps but not the number of MS printed. It will be nice if someone could answer this question ….. or the officials of Philately section of India Post could throw some light on this issue….

 

Postage Stamps to go online in 2012

Department of Post is planning to introduce online version of postage stamps, which will enable India Post customers to use print out of the stamp for sending mails.
"Our effort is to make access of postal service easy and simple for users. We are working on project that will enable them to print copy of bar-code based receipt and use it in place of postal stamps for sending mails," Department of Post (DoP) Secretary Radhika Doraiswamy told PTI.
The project is a part of e-commerce initiatives by India Post, she added.
"Our minister (Union Minister for Communications and IT Kapil Sibal) has already inaugurated e-post office and has asked e-market place to be developed. We are in process of developing application for various platforms on internet," she added.

Under the e-market place project, DoP will facilitate selling of small scale and cottage industry products through its website.The product catalogue will be published on internet and will give customers an option to select and make payments for the purchased product online.
Once the order in placed, post-office, located nearest to the product seller's location, will arrange for the pick-up and delivery of the product to the customer."We will accept orders from both domestic and international customers," Doraiswamy said.Doraiswamy mentioned that DoP is contemplating introduction of home pick-up services for mails and parcels for some set of services such as registered post, insured post, speed post and WorldNet. "Customer would have to pay online and register for the service. A postman will then go and pick the parcel or mail from the customer. The plan, however, is currently in a discussion phase," she said.
She added, "We have to ensure that post office gets the payment for delivering services and customers get services conveniently. Everything is being worked out through RFPs (request for proposals), but most of our services will come on internet in 2012," Doraiswamy said.

Hi ! Here is the latest arrival of Miniature sheet and sheetlet of the recent issue, “Preserve The Polar Regions and Glaciers.” These are available only at select Philatelic Bureaus of India. Here is a nice cover issued recently in Agra. The cover was issued by jointly  Rotary International and India Post for campaign “ Go Polio Forever”. The cover also features Taj on the emblem of Rotary International. I have a news clipping to share with all of you that appeared in Hindi Daily Amar Ujala on 26th Jan. It is about a Post office in Uttaranchal which functions for 3 months only in a year. It is a tradition from British Period when Britishers opened a temporary Post Office in a Rest House at a place, 22 Kms form Nainital called Dhoopchor  where they used to work from 15 April to 30 June. After their return the staff also shifted to a  nearby Post office at Mehar Gaon place. This tradition still continues and post office runs here from 15 April to 15 June every year. 2010 Smithsonian Philatelic Achievement Awards 

Smithsonian National Postal Museum Now Soliciting Nominations  

The National Postal Museum is currently soliciting nominations for philatelists who will be recognized with the 2010 Smithsonian Philatelic Achievement Awards. The award honors Americans and individuals from around the world for outstanding lifetime accomplishments in the field of philately. The achievements can include original research that significantly advances our understanding of philately and postal history; exceptional service to the philatelic community; and the overall promotion of philately for the benefit of current and future collectors. Awards will be presented at the museum in October of 2010.

Nominations can be submitted by any individual or organization. Self-nominations will not be accepted. The nomination must be a stand-alone justification of why the candidate is being proposed and the candidate should not be aware of the nomination. The individual's lifetime philatelic achievements must be delineated in the nomination. The justifications must be between 500 - 1,000 words in length. Nominations must be received by the Nominating Committee by March 1, 2010.

The nomination must be sent in writing to the: Smithsonian Philatelic Achievement Award Nominating Committee, National Postal Museum, PO Box 37012, MRC-570, Washington, DC 20013-7012.
