50th Anniversary of human space flight: Stamps by  UNPA

Today on 12 April 2011, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issues three stamps in the denominations of US$ 0.44, CHF 0.50 and € 0.35 in a mini-sheet format of sixteen stamps to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Human Space Flight. UNPA is also issuing one souvenir sheet with six different denominations, two from each office. The denominations are US$ 0.44, US$ 0.98, CHF 0.85, CHF 1.00, € 0.55 and € 0.65. This is the first time ever that UNPA has issued a souvenir sheet in this format.

On 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics became the first human to travel into outer space. His space flight heralded a new era of human endeavour in what has become known as the “final frontier”. Since that historic flight, humans have set foot upon the Moon, have learned to work in the harsh vacuum of outer space, and, for the last decade, have maintained a permanent human presence outside the Earth.

Though human space flight began during the height of the cold war, it became an arena of both competition and cooperation. The race that culminated in the first steps taken on the Moon by American astronaut Neil Armstrong on 20 July 1969, also resulted in the first tentative steps towards international cooperation in human space flight – the 1975 joint American-Soviet space mission, known as the “Apollo-Soyuz Test Project”. Since then, nations have recognized the benefits of working together in outer space and that cooperation has led to the establishment of humanity’s permanent space outpost: the International Space Station (ISS). With over 15 nations working together in what is considered one of humankind’s greatest scientific and technical achievements, the ISS is a truly international endeavour and epitomizes one of the goals of the United Nations: international cooperation in outer space.

Celebration of 50th Anniversary of first manned spaceflight by USA

image

To be issued on 4 May 2011

The 50th anniversary of America’s first manned spaceflight is being commemorated with the issuance of two stamps on May 4 by US Postal service.

One stamp salutes the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Project Mercury, America’s first manned spaceflight program, and NASA astronaut Alan Shepard’s historic flight on May 5, 1961, aboard the spacecraft Freedom 7.

The other stamp draws attention to NASA’s unmanned MESSENGER mission, a scientific investigation of the planet Mercury. On March 18, 2011, MESSENGER became the first spacecraft to enter into orbit around Mercury.Studying Mercury will help astrobiologists understand the nature of small, rocky planets and the conditions that lead to habitability on such worlds.

These two historic missions—Shepard’s Mercury flight and MESSENGER’s orbit of Mercury—frame a remarkable fifty-year period in which America has advanced space exploration through more than 1,500 manned and unmanned flights.

The Project Mercury stamp depicts Shepard, the Mercury capsule Freedom 7, and the Redstone launching rocket. The MESSENGER Mission stamp depicts the MESSENGER spacecraft in orbit around the planet Mercury.

Architectural delights on Czech stamps ! - Date of Issue 5 May 2009

The chateau at Horšovský Týn

The chateau at Horšovský Týn is located in the West Bohemia. After the 1547 fire the original early Gothic bishop castle of the central European type of citadels underwent a delicate reconstruction led by the Italian architect A. Galli into a Renaissance chateau of the Lobkowitz family. Still preserved is the early Gothic bishop castle chapel with uniquely structured ribbed vault and wall paintings built by the Burgundian construction works in the mid-13th century. With the exception of small Neo-Renaissance rebuilding in the back courtyard in the late 19th century the chateau underwent no further reconstruction. The knight hall contains a unique gallery of portraits of Czech rulers. The origin of the gallery is connected with the chateau at Jindřichův Hradec and the Slavata family. In the course of the 16th and 17th centuries the latter ordered a chronological series of portraits of rulers from the Přemyslid family through the Luxembourg family, Jiří of Poděbrady, the Jagellon family until the Habsburg family. The largest part of the original magnificent series of portraits is kept at the chateau at Horšovský Týn.

In 1996 due to its immense historic value the entire chateau was proclaimed a national cultural monument. The chateau includes not only the main chateau building but also the building of the burgraviate and the almost forty-hectare landscape gardens with the Gloriette, the Widows' House and the Loretan Chapel which is likely the first building of this kind in Bohemia. The gardens are open to the public on the side of the town of Horšovský Týn. Today the chateau is one of the Czech monuments which are most open to the public, offering several visitor tours through equipped residential premises of the chateau and the richly equipped chateau saloons.

The postage stamp shown above features a part of the chateau with the main entrance gate. The design of the postage is made complete with a drawing outlining the unique ribbed vault of the castle chapel.

The Cistercian Monastery

The Cistercian Monastery at Vyšší Brod, celebrating this year the 750th anniversary of its foundation, belongs to the major cultural monuments in the Southern Bohemia. It was founded in 1259 by Vok of Rožmberk who called Cistercian monks from the Austrian Wilhering. Vyšší Brod became the Rožmberk family monastery, endowed with large property, and the burial place of ten generations of the family.

In 1611 when the family of Rožmberk died out the monastery passed under the imperial patronage and later on it was granted to the Eggenberg family. The monks had to maintain continuous fighting with the family for their rights. In the early 18th century the monastery passed onto the Schwarzenberg family. The rather distant location of the monastery saved it from destruction at the time of the hussite wars as well as at the reformation era.

The location remained basically unharmed and constitutes the best preserved and historically most authentic monastery in the Czech Republic. The cycle of nine board paintings by the so-called Master of Vyšší Brod in the gallery of the monastery is a middle pointed style jewel of the South Bohemian painting. The library is the third largest Czech library. Located in the chapel is a board painting of the Madonna of Vyšší Brod by an unknown painter and the most precious item in the treasury of the monastery is the double-arm Záviš' cross. A community of Cistercian monks who moved back to the monastery has been gradually reconstructing the monastery. The building of the abbey is the seat of a branch of the Postal Museum in Prague hosting the permanent exposition Postal History in the Czech Lands since 1526 until Today. The exhibits include, e.g. coaches and sledges, postal uniforms, contemporary signs and post boxes, postage stamps, historic telegraph machines, telex machines, telephone machines, etc. Since 1995 the monastery is on the list of national cultural heritage.

The postage stamp features the exterior of the monastery church of the Holy Virgin which is the actual dominating point of the buildings. Towering above the church is a drawing outlining the Gothic style of architecture with ogive arches and a wheel-window.

Club News

In the Club News I have some recent issues from Canada and Austria. The souvenir Sheet from Canada depicts the famous personalities of the World, photographed by renowned photographer Yousuf Karsh. Its a very beautiful collectable S/s in classic black & white with fine use of Bluish Grey colour. This light & dark contrast has its own beauty in photography. In one of my earlier posts I wrote about stamps on photography issued by Poland. This is another beautiful addition to the collection of those who love photography. Here is another stamp by Austria, issued during Euro-2008 which is unique in some way and a novel collectable item. This stamp was left by me to mention during EURO2008.Please go through the details you will know yourself. In the next part, some news from our readers and a part of the series of Se-tenant stamps of India from the album of Mr. Shrikant Parikh. For this post we thank Mr. Pradip Jain for his contribution.

UEFA EURO 2008
Austria issued the best stamps for this year's Euro -2008 in the world. All the stamps have become very popular among philatelists. One more stamp that shows the Cup against a blue background, and is decorated with four particularly large original Swarovski crystals. It was issued on June 5, 2008 by Austria. The cooperation with the Swarovski company from Wattens in Tyrol, the world & apos;s market leader in the production of synthetic glass gemstones, has been proving its value since the issue of the now legendary Crystal Worlds book of stamps in 2004. The fixing of the gems to the present commemoratives again requires maximum precision. A complex week-long production process produces a uniquely refined stamp.

15. Niket Bubna, Indore

I am Niket Bubna from Indore. I am a Biotechnology undergraduate and aiming to pursue graduate studies in the same field. As for my interest in philately, I believe that a lifetime ain't enough to even have a complete Indian Post-independence collection (gutter pairs, varieties, proofs etc. included) and thus have immense interest in Indian philately. I have been active for the past 9 years and till now I have worked upon the Defence and tourism themes. I also collect traffic light blocks of all the four different markings, sheetlets and max cards. I have a passion to get photographed with post offices in all the places I visit. Collecting printed articles from magazines, newspapers etc about the stamp issues and things related to it also attracts me. This hobby has given immense satisfaction and knowledge, truly making it the King of Hobbies for me. E-Mail : niket511@gmail.com
