The stamp and First Day Cover commemorating the European Championship in Women’s Volleyball both feature a drawing depicting the dynamics of the players’ movements.

Volley Ball

The popular game known as volleyball originates from the United States. The rules were laid down in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a physical education teacher from YMCA, and have since then evolved to include changes and modifications under the approval of FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) in order to make the game ever more dynamic and attractive for the spectators. Initially the score was won only after the given team’s own service and the matches sometimes took as long as 4 hours. Nowadays, with each rally bringing a score, the game usually takes only two hours. Two teams of six players compete against each other and the game is carried on until one of them scores 3 sets . The players are allowed to hit the ball three times before returning it to the opponent’s half. In 1998 an additional player was introduced called “libero", who can only play in defense. All the other players rotate between the positions of setter, middle blocker, outside hitter and opposite hitter. European Championships in Women’s Volleyball were first held in 1949. Volleyball has been an Olympic sport since 1964.

An interesting fact

Beach volleyball is a younger sister of the traditional volleyball. It is also an Olympic sport (it has been one since 1996), however its rules are slightly different and the teams consist of only two players. Nevertheless, both sports fall under the authority of the same sports associations
